Strovilia issue high on the agenda of FMs talks

United Nations, Jun 10 (CNA) The violation of the status quo ante at the southeastern village of Strovilia was the main focus during discussions Foreign Minister George Iacovou had here Monday with representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, who acknowledged the governments positive stance in efforts to resume peace talks.

Iacovou completes his contacts in New York on Tuesday with a meeting with UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. Earlier, he will meet his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto. Last night, Iacovou met UN Under Secretary for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast.

Hannay rules out two-state solution in Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- A political settlement in Cyprus has not, cannot and will not be based on the idea of two states on the island, Lord David Hannay, Britain's former special representative for Cyprus has stressed, expressing hope that the island's political leadership will realize the advantages of a solution and return to the negotiating table.

In an interview with CNA after resigning his post, Hannay said the parties involved in the Cyprus problem should understand that general statements expressing willingness to continue the talks ''are not enough'' to persuade UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to reengage in the peace effort.

Hannay reiterated that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash led the latest attempt at a comprehensive solution to deadlock. ''Mr Denktash wanted two houses in Cyprus and a little corridor between the two houses which he could control,'' the British diplomat said.

Referring to a package of economic measures the European Union has announced in aid of the Turkish Cypriots, he said this was a ''very welcome first step''.

President expects UN resolution to condemn Turkish violations

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said today that Turkey is implementing a policy of provocation to serve its own purposes, both in the Aegean Sea and in the village of Strovilia in Cyprus, and noted he expects the UN to adopt a resolution condemning the violations of the status quo in Strovilia.

Spokesman says Denktash's arguments refuted

Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said today that the conclusion from the implementation of the government's measures to support the Turkish Cypriots is that the arguments of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that the two communities cannot live together and that special security conditions must be in place to avoid conflicts, have been refuted.

Chrisostomides was speaking at a joint press conference with Minister of Justice and Public Order Doros Theodorou, who is the coordinator of the government's policy for the measures to support the Turkish Cypriots and who said ''some weaknesses'' were found in procedures and some others had to be improved regarding the measures, adding that the government was in contact with Turkish Cypriot political parties to get feedback.

The Spokesman noted that the government ''wants to safeguard unrestricted freedom of movement along with the broader respect of human rights of all Cypriots but was complaining and continues to regard Denktash's demand to present passports as illegal''.

Weston says new Turkish government more willing for solution

Brussels, Jun 10 (CNA) - The United States and the European Union agree on their approach regarding the Cyprus problem, the State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston said here today, noting that the new Turkish government has shown a stronger will than the old government to reach a settlement but should prove it in practice by signing the solution plan put forward by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The US official said it was in the interest of the Turkish Cypriots to reach a settlement before the island's full accession to the EU because anything provided for in a solution would be included in the Accession Treaty.

In this way, he said, no appeals could be made to the European Court of Human Rights on any aspect of the plan, which may not be in line with the acquis communautaire. He noted that an international solution signed by Greece, Turkey and Britain would not be the same as a settlement included in the Accession Treaty.

United Nations, Jun 10 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Iacovou met today in New York and discussed developments in Cyprus after the Turkish occupation regime eased restrictions on the free movement of citizens and the situation in the southeastern village of Strovilia.

Speaking after the half-hour meeting, Iacovou said he wanted to find out what the UN chief had in mind for the future.
