    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- More Turkish Cypriots crossed Wednesday into the southern government-controlled part of Cyprus than Greek Cypriots visiting the northern Turkish-occupied areas.

    US President wants Cyprus solution based on UN plan

    Washington, May 15 (CNA) -- US President George Bush has said that a political settlement in Cyprus should be based on a UN peace proposal which he described as ''fair and balanced''.

    The US President welcomed the partial lifting of restrictions on free movement to and from the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, which were imposed by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime after the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    Government denounces showing of passports

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government, through its Spokesman, Kypros Chrisostomides, has denounced once again the illegal regimes demand that Greek Cypriots show their passports to cross to the Turkish-occupied areas of the Republic.

    Chrisostomides said the pressure would continue on the regime until the illegality stops.

    EU process overriding factor in Cyprus, says Turkish Cypriot

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- The President of the Turkish Cypriot Businessmen Association (ISAD) Osdil Nami has indicated that for the first time the long-term interests of Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Greece and Turkey coincide and this is a direct result of the European Union enlargement process, which includes Cyprus.

    He also said that recent developments on the island are no substitute for a political settlement, which has to be found on the basis of a UN proposal put forward by Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Government condemns incidents at Morfou, Athienou

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) The Denktash regime in the occupied town of Morfou interrupted a prayer on Thursday, which Metropolitan Morfou Neofytos was conducting in the occupied church of Agios Mamantos and asked him to leave, together with Greek Cypriot worshippers.

    The incident was condemned by the government, which said the illegality continues on the part of the Denktash regime with various actions including the illegal apprehension of Greek Cypriots.

    Spokesman: Court decisions must be executed

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- The government considers ''absurd and illegal'' a suggestion by the Turkish Cypriot regime to set up ''courts'' in occupied Cyprus to handle property claims by Greek Cypriots.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides suggested that such ideas should be rejected by the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights as legally invalid.

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) The Cyprus State Fairs Authority, which is gearing up to open its gate to the public for the 28th Cyprus International Fair on 23 May, is fully prepared and ready to utilize the new challenges of the accession of Cyprus to the European Union.

    Chairman of the Cyprus State Fairs Authority, Iacovos Demetriou in a press conference here Thursday said President Tassos Papadopoulos will formally open the fair on Thursday 22 May in the presence of dignitaries. The fair will open the next day to the public until 1st June.

    Strasbourg, May 15 (CNA) The European Parliament calls on the Turkish government to take concrete measures to prove its commitment for respect of human rights and to review its legislation with a view to guaranteeing the protection of democracy, transparency and human rights in Turkey.

    At the same time, it expresses shock at the raid carried out by members of the Anti-Terror Forces, accompanied by the Prosecutor of the Ankara State Security Court, against the headquarters and the branch office of the Human Rights Association (IHD) in Ankara on 6 May 2003 and called on the Turkish authorities to clarify immediately the reasons for this action.
