    Washington, Apr 4 (CNA) -- The US has stressed that the resumption of talks under UN auspices is the way towards a comprehensive settlement and noted that confidence building measures in Cyprus is a matter that can be taken up by the island's two communities, in the context of the good offices mission of the UN Secretary General.

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- A prominent Turkish Cypriot trade unionist Ali Gule has lashed out at Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, saying his latest move in relation to the Cyprus question was a ''tactical manoeuvre to secure a more positive approach from the (UN) Security Council.''

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) The government is not prepared to begin negotiations on Cyprus through correspondence, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said today, commenting on the second letter which Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has sent to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos on his so-called ''proposals''.

    He said Denktash's ''diplomatic fireworks'' fell through, adding that the Turkish Cypriot leader did not present any proposals but conveyed an invitation to start negotiations.

    Foreign Minister says Denktash trying to eliminate UN role

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister George Iacovou said here today that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in offering to talk about confidence building measures, is basically trying to do away with the UN, under whose auspices peace negotiations take place.

    The Minister said he was not surprised that Denktash had sent a letter to President Tassos Papadopoulos and explained that Denktash's proposal ''is an invitation to start negotiations about confidence building measures.''

    Central Bank reduces Lombard interest rate by 0.5%

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) - Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou announced today the reduction by 0.5% of the marginal lending facility rate (Lombard) to 4.5% with a view to contribute to the recovery of the Cypriot economy.

    Speaking to the press after the extraordinary meeting of the Monetary Committee, Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou justified the decision, saying that ''by reducing this rate, the Committee judged that it could contribute to the joint effort and aim for the Cypriot economy's recovery''.
