    Washington, Apr 2 (CNA) -- The US and Greece have expressed their hope that there will be renewed efforts to negotiate further on a UN peace proposal for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, after the collapse last month of the latest attempt by the UN to make headway towards a solution.

    Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) -- The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus question, reviewed today the latest developments in the Cyprus problem following the collapse of the UN-led peace effort in anticipation of next week's report on the matter by the UN Secretary General.

    Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) -- A US State Department report on human rights in Cyprus for 2002 says these rights are ''generally respected'' on the island but falls short of giving a true and accurate picture of the scale of human rights violations as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    Invited to comment on the report, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said it was received today and was being examined.

    Denktash says his ideas could initiate dialogue on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said today he has sent a letter to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos containing ideas he believed could initiate a process of dialogue and consultation, leading to a working relationship.

    Denktash told a press conference today in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic that he believed the package could act as a catalyst for the realisation of a mutually acceptable comprehensive settlement, adding that the significance of the socio-psychological dimension of the Cyprus question has been overlooked for far too long.

    He said he wrote a letter to President Papadopoulos today ''informing him that we have for too long overlooked the significance of the socio-psychological dimension of the Cyprus issue, and especially the deep crisis of confidence between the two sides.''

    2010:CYPPRESS:17 Cyprus problem must be solved within UN framework, says Simitis Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) The Cyprus problem must be solved within the framework of the United Nations, stressed Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis in reply to his Turkish counterparts proposal to discuss the issue during the framework of the summit of East European countries to be held in Belgrade.

    Replying to a question today by a member of the European Parliaments Socialist Group, Simitis said if such a meeting is to take place in Belgrade, then the Cyprus problem will not be the only issue to be examined, the Premier was quoted by Athens News Agency as saying.

    Simitis said he clarified to Erdogan that the Cyprus issue is being discussed between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and there is nothing more that he could do than just offer his opinion.
