T/C politician: UN peace plan should be incorporated in Accession Treaty

Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- The UN peace plan on Cyprus should be incorporated in the Accession Treaty to be signed between Cyprus and the EU on 16 April 2003, thus giving the Turkish Cypriots a sign of a political will to solve the Cyprus issue, Mustafa Akinci, former leader of the Turkish Cypriot Communal Liberation Party, has suggested.

Addresing a panel discussion here yesterday on ''The Cyprus issue and 16th April'', Akinci also called upon the Greek Cypriots to show the same will as the Turkish Cypriots to solve the Cyprus issue on the basis of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's peace plan, by organising similar rallies like the ones in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

UN inspectors arrive in Cyprus from Iraq

Larnaca, Mar 18 (CNA) -- The first group of UN inspectors and humanitarian workers arrived here today from Bagdad after being ordered by UN Headquarters to leave Iraq ahead of a likely US attack.

A UN Boeing 727 aircraft carried some 80 of the 134 inspectors and their support staff at Larnaca International Airport.

UN weapons inspectors arrive in Cyprus

Larnaca, Mar 18 (CNA) UN weapons inspectors and support staff, who arrived in Cyprus after being ordered to leave Baghdad, said they had done their job in Iraq as best as they could, objectively and professionally.

Speaking to reporters, Hiro Ueki, a spokesman for the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), said it was unfortunate that they had to leave, noting that it was a high-level political decision.

Cyprus a safe country, says the government

Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) Cyprus is away from the centre of possible US military intervention against Iraq and is a safe country, said here Tuesday Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides.

He was speaking after a meeting at the Presidential Palace, chaired by Acting President, House President Demetris Christofias, which examined the situation prior to the looming US war against Iraq.
