[01] House ratifies conventions and protocols1020:CYPPRESS:01House ratifies conventions and protocols Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives approved Thursday evening a law, ratifying the UNIDROIT Convention on the International Return of Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects. The convention, which applies to claims of an international character, provides for the restitution of stolen cultural objects and the return of cultural objects removed from the territory of a Contracting State contrary to its law regulating the export of cultural objects for the purpose of protecting its cultural heritage. The 56-member Parliament also ratified the instruments of the 22nd meeting of the Universal Postal Union and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks, posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology. Furthermore, it passed the Madrid Protocol, which is one of the Madrid Union Treaties, enabling the registration of International Trademarks with the WIPO. The House also ratified the protocol attached to the agreement between the government of the Republic of Cyprus and the government of the Italian republic on the readmission of persons illegally entering and/or staying in the territory of the two countries, for the implementation. In addition, it approved the Cyprus-Egypt Agreement, delimiting the exclusive economic zone in the sea area between the two countries. De Soto said on Sunday he would be meeting the Secretary General Kofi Annan in The Hague and would be in touch with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos to inform him about the procedure of the Monday meetings.
