    Annan discusses Cyprus with Simitis, Gul

    United Nations, Feb 19 (CNA) -- Efforts to conclude an agreement on Cyprus by the end of the month were examined during meetings which UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan held with the Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey.

    UN Deputy spokeswoman Hua Jiang told reporters during Tuesdays briefing that the Secretary General had several meetings in Brussels.

    Among his meetings were one with Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul with whom he discussed Iraq and efforts to continue to conclude agreement on Cyprus by the end of this month.

    Nicosia, Feb 19 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, said newly-elected Cyprus President, Tassos Papadopoulos, wants to start the negotiations as soon as possible, something which he welcomed.

    Nicosia, Feb 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus strongly believes the peaceful resolution of the Iraqi crisis will have a positive effect on the wider efforts towards achieving a comprehensive and lasting solution of the Palestinian question.

    Outgoing Cyprus President, Glafcos Clerides, in his intervention during Tuesdays special meeting in Brussels of the Troika of the EU with the accession partners and the candidate countries after the extraordinary European council on Iraq and the Middle East, said Cyprus welcomes the conclusions reached at the European Council and fully subscribe to their contents.

    Commission gives favourable opinion on acceding countries

    Brussels, Feb 19 (CNA) -- The European Commission delivered today a favourable opinion on the accession of Cyprus and the other nine acceding countries, adopting the contents of the Treaty of Accession. The opinion will be submitted to the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers.

    The Commission said it delivers a favourable opinion on the accession to the EU of the Czech Republic, the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Cyprus, the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Hungary, the Republic of Malta, the Republic of Poland, the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovak Republic.

    Cyprus and Egypt sign agreement on economic zone

    Nicosia, Feb 19 (CNA) - Cyprus and Egypt have signed an agreement for the exploitation of the exclusive economic zone between the two countries, an accord which Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis has said it was of historic importance.

    He said the research and utilisation of the mineral wealth of the exclusive economic zone, including possible oil deposits, would have been one of the immediate priorities of the government, had the island not been divided.

    Speaking at a press conference regarding the signing of the agreement, which took place on February 17 in Cairo, Rolandis said Cyprus now has rights over 32,000 square kilometres of sea, about four times its land area.
