    Annan sends letter to Turkey, Greece over Cyprus security

    New York, Feb 6 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has sent letters to the Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey, calling on them to sign soon an agreement on Cyprus security, a Greek Foreign Ministry source revealed here Wednesday after Annans meeting with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    Papandreou told Greek journalists after the 45-minute meeting that the talks covered the crisis over Iraq, the Cyprus problem, Zimbabwe and the situation in the Korean peninsula.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 7/02/2003 to 8/02/2003 --------------------

    The weather will be unsettled with rain, thunderstorms and snow on highest Troodos peaks. The winds will be southwesterly fresh to strong and the sea will be rough. The temperature will range from 8 to 17 inland and from 13 to 18 on the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 9/02/2003 to 10/2/2003

    Remaining unsettled with rain, thunderstorms and snow on higher peaks. Winds will remain string and sea rough to very rough. Temperatures will drop.

    AUCTION RESULTS OF TREASURY BILLS ISSUED ON 6.2.2003

    An auction was held on 6.2.2003 for the sale by the Central

    Bank of Cyprus, for and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, of upto £30.000.000 Treasury Bills with

    date of issue 6.2.2003 and 52 weeks maturity. The total value of the bids submitted was £49.000.000. The

    competitive bids amounted to £45.000.000 and the non-competitive bids to £4.000.000. The total value of bids

    accepted was £30.000.000. The competitive bids accepted amounted to £26.000.000, while the non-competitive bids

    accepted amounted to £4.000.000. In accordance with the terms of the auction the non?competitive

    bids amounting to £4.000.000 were accepted at the average weighted price of the accepted competitive bids. This price

    was £963,12 per £100 nominal value representing an annual yield of 3,84%.

    US says hopes up for Cyprus settlement

    Constantinople, Feb 6 (CNA) - US State Department Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston appeared optimistic about the prospects of a Cyprus settlement and said that at the end of his meetings in Ankara today, he thought hopes were up for a solution.

    Speaking after a meeting with Turkish Foreign Ministry officials, Weston said steps were becoming faster towards that end but noted that time was running out.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, said here Thursday there was room for further expansion of trade exchanges between Cyprus and Syria.

    He was addressing a seminar organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Cyprus-Syrian Business Association, aiming to improve economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

    Pikis elected International Criminal Court judge

    United Nations, Feb 6 (CNA) - President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus Georgios Pikis was elected today as one of the judges of the International Criminal Court.

    His election has been described at UN headquarters as a huge diplomatic success for Cyprus, which is in part due to Pikis' excellent qualifications.

    Pikis was born in Larnaca in 1939. He studied law at London University and in 1961 became a Barrister-at-Law of Gray's Inn.

    He has been President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus since 1995, after having served as Justice of the Supreme Court, President of a District Court, and District Judge.
