His election has been described at UN headquarters as a huge diplomatic success for Cyprus, which is in part due to Pikis' excellent qualifications. Pikis was born in Larnaca in 1939. He studied law at London University and in 1961 became a Barrister-at-Law of Gray's Inn. He has been President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus since 1995, after having served as Justice of the Supreme Court, President of a District Court, and District Judge.
