Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Tuesday and Wednesday 21/01/2003 to 22/01/2003 --------------------- The weather on Tuesday and Wednesday will be unstable with local showers and probable thunderstorms. Some snow showers are expected over the highest peaks of Troodos range. Sunny spells are more likely on Wednesday.

The wind will be mainly Easterly 4 locally 5bf and the state of sea moderated to rough.

The minimum temperature will range from 2 degrees over the mountains to 8 degrees inland and to 10 degrees over the coastal areas. The maximum temperature will range from 4 degrees over the mountains to 14 inland and to 16 over the coastal areas.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday 23/01/2003 to 24/01/2003 ------------------------------- The weather will be mainly fine with temporal cloud and long sunny intervals. The temperature will note an increase.

De Soto: Solution possible if there is willingness to compromise

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) - The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has said here Monday the UN strongly believes that the chance to get a settlement on Cyprus within reason is now, by the end of February, and this will require courage, political will, willingness to compromise and very hard work.

Speaking after meeting President Glafcos Clerides, de Soto said there was ''no plan'' that he was aware of that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would visit the island.

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) - Minister of Justice and Public Order Alecos Shambos, who is also President for the Cyprus National Machinery for Women's Rights, has left for Skopje to take part in the Council of Europe Fifth Conference of European Ministers for the Equality of Men and Women, due to take place on January 22 and 23.

Foreign Minister expects ''explicit report'' from UN

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides believes that the UN should not hesitate in speaking out about the negative positions adopted by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, if Denktash does not change his tune and does not help reach a settlement by the end of February, a target date set by the UN.

The Minister also believes that Rauf Denktash's days as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community are numbered and that ''the mirror has cracked'' as far as Turkey's monolithic position towards Cyprus is concerned.

Speaking at a luncheon hosted by CNA for correspondents of foreign news agencies here, the Minister said if the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides see each other as partners in a future reunited Cyprus then things can move quickly towards a settlement.

Italian Speaker warns Turkey against non solution in Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- The Speaker of the Italian Parliament Pier Ferdinando Casini has said that Turkey cannot possibly expect to become a member of the European Union before there is a political settlement in Cyprus.

Casini met in Rome with President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias, on a two-day official visit to Italy, and discussed with him bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East, in Iraq and in particular Mediterranean Cooperation.

Akkinci says Turkish side to lose in absence of solution

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) - A Turkish Cypriot politician said the Turkish Cypriots expect the same commitment from the Greek Cypriot side on the UN Secretary General's plan for a Cyprus settlement, noting that if the opportunity is missed, the real losers will be themselves.

Speaking after meeting here Monday United Democrats' leader George Vassiliou, Mustafa Akkinci, former leader of the Communal Liberation Party, said Turkish Cypriots want a solution to the Cyprus problem and accession to the European Union in order to live a better life, and stressed that only a united front in Ankara would force Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to sign the Annan plan.
