UN top envoy in Athens for contacts

Nicosia, Jan 16 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus, is in Athens for a series of meetings as part of his effort to conclude a peace agreement in Cyprus on the basis of a UN proposal on a comprehensive settlement.

Later today, de Soto will meet Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and is expected to see Russian deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Chizhov, who is in the Greek capital to see his Greek counterpart Tasos Yiannitsis.

Chizhov has served in the Russian embassy here for years and was later on appointed Moscow's special envoy for Cyprus.

Russia hopes for ''productive, substantive'' negotiations

Nicosia, Jan 16 (CNA) -- Russian Cyprus envoy Vladimir Prygin has expressed support for a just, viable and comprehensive settlement in Cyprus and praised the constructive approach the Greek Cypriot side displays at the UN-led peace talks.

Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides here today, Prygin said Moscow wishes to see a ''productive and substantive'' round of negotiations, which began here Wednesday, leading to a mutually acceptable agreement.

Athens, Jan 16 (CNA) -- The US and Greece agree on how to move forward to achieve their common goal of a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, US State Department special coordinator on Cyprus Thomas Weston has said, adding this is ''exceptionally helpful''.

[06] Weston: a settlement is possible by end of February

Speaking on arrival to the island where he will hold meetings in the next couple of days before departing on Saturday, Weston said the date was necessary to give time to incorporate the settlement into the accession treaty and prepare the referenda, in order to make it an effective settlement.
