    Nicosia, Dec 30 (CNA) Greece hopes that negotiations for a Cyprus settlement will yield results by 28 February, a target date set by the UN, so that a reunited Cyprus can sign the European Union Accession Treaty, said Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    1630:CYPPRESS:06 Denktash under pressure for settlement, says Spokesman Nicosia, Dec 30 (CNA) Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said it is crystal-clear that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is acting according to the instructions and perhaps pressure from the new Turkish government when he said he would make everything possible to find a Cyprus settlement by March.

    I do not think any logical person can accept that Mr. Denktash has changed his position views in such short time and has become compliant, the Spokesman added.

    He said many things will be assessed by the extend in which the new Turkish government will be able to strengthen its positions and put pressure on Denktash to maintain a more flexible attitude.

    1850:CYPPRESS:07 Economic prospects positive if no war in Iraq, says Central Bank Nicosia, Dec 30 (CNA) Prospects for Cyprus economy in 2003 could be positive conveying an optimistic message, if there are no unforeseeable developments in the surrounding geographic area, said here Monday Central Bank Governor, Christodoulos Christodoulou.

    I especially associate my predictions with a possible intervention in Iraq, the Governor said. If this development does not take place, then undoubtedly 2003 will provide better prospects and developments as far as the rate of growth and other fundamental aspects of our economy are concerned, Christodoulou added.

    He also expressed hope that the fiscal deficit will be around 2,8 percent.

    1930:CYPPRESS:08 Greek President hopes for Cyprus solution in 2003 Nicosia, Dec 30 (CNA) Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos wished that the New Year would pave the way for a Cyprus settlement, following the developments of the Copenhagen European Council.

    In a telegram to President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides for the new year, Stephanopoulos said we look forward that after the successful conclusion of the deliberations of the Copenhagen Council and the decision for Cyprus accession to the European Union, the New Year will be able to provide a way out to the great national problem of Cyprus which, under your firm and persistent guidance, is now at a point where we can hope.
