    US: Cyprus agreement can be achieved by February 28

    Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) -- US believes an agreement for a Cyprus settlement can be achieved between now and February 28, 2003, US Ambassador in Nicosia Michael Klosson said in a written statement issued here today, after his meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    Klosson stressed ''the reasons for both sides to seek a comprehensive settlement remain as valid after Copenhagen as they were before'' and that ''both sides must work with the utmost urgency on the three areas requiring immediate attention identified by the Secretary General in his recent communication to the parties.''

    ''The US strongly supports United Nations efforts to achieve a solution and welcomes the December 18 statement by the president of the Security Council calling for intensifying the negotiations,'' Klosson said.

    1550:CYPPRESS:06 CoE SG to visit Cyprus in January Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary-General Walter Schwimmer, will visit Cyprus from 5-9 January for talks with the islands leadership.

    Schwimmer will be received by President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides and will also hold meetings with President of the House of Representatives, Demetris Christofias, and Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, a CoE statement said.

    President to reply to SG by Monday

    Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will reply in writing to a letter by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on his good offices mission with regard to Cyprus by Monday, at the latest, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    The spokesman also said Annan's letter, sent to the Turkish Cypriot leader and the governments of Greece and Turkey as well, has asked the two sides to intensify in a specific manner their efforts to find a settlement by 28 February.

    ''The Secretary General refers to a visit by his special adviser Alvaro de Soto to Ankara and Athens in early January before he returns to the island around the 8 January to begin intensive efforts for a settlement in the first two months of the year,'' Papapetrou said.

    The spokesman said he would not make any further comment on the content of the letter until after the President sends his reply to Annan.

    He did however say that in his letter Annan defines the points which he believes should be the object of negotiations between the two sides.

    Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) Cypriot officials have completed negotiations in Brussels with European Commission officials regarding a package of measures the government intends to announce for the economic development of the Turkish Cypriots.

    UN technical committees to begin work in earnest

    Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) -- Two ad hoc bilateral technical committees, set up by the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides, will begin intensive work as of January 7 with a view at completing their task by the end of February, in parallel with negotiations on the political front for a comprehensive settlement.

    The two committees will deal with legislation that will govern the common state of Cyprus and with international treaties that will be in place, if and when there is a settlement. They will be meeting twice a day.

    Representatives of the two sides met today, under UN auspices, and charted the way ahead for the work they need to do. The committees will reconvene on 7 January.

    Attorney General Alecos Markides, who heads the Greek Cypriot delegations to the two committees, has welcomed the positive approach of the Turkish Cypriot side at today's meeting to the task ahead.

    1810:CYPPRESS:10 Russian Communist Party maintains its support to Cyprus Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) Russian Federation Communist Party Acting President, Valentin Koptsuv, said here Friday it is important that Cyprus becomes a peaceful, united, free and democratic state.

    Speaking after meeting left wing AKEL General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, Koptsuv who is visiting Cyprus, heading a delegation, at AKELs invitation said we have always remained supporters of the positions expressed by Cyprus and AKEL regarding the Cyprus problem.

    We have full understanding of the issue and the problemsand we believe that such position allows for a peaceful solution to the problem, guarantees security issues for both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and can be the foundation for progress in Cyprus, he added.

    He said his party and the majority of the people of Russia share this position.

    2020:CYPPRESS:11 G/C and T/C urge Turkey and Denktash to change attitude on Cyprus Nicosia, Dec 20 (CNA) Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political party leaders pledged their readiness for a solution to the Cyprus problem by February 28th, as set out by the Copenhagen European Council conclusions.

    Leaders from both sides, speaking after a meeting in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia, organised by the Slovak Embassy, said a solution, which should be based on the revised plan of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, can only be achieved if Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash change their stance on Cyprus.

    Greek Cypriot political party leaders said the desire of the Turkish Cypriots for Cyprus to enter the European Union united is clear.

    A joint communique, issued at the end of the meeting and read by the Slovak Ambassador, Jan Varso, said they ''exchanged views about the conclusions of the Copenhagen Summit of the European Council on the Cyprus issue, with regard to the achievement of the solution of the Cyprus problem until 28th February 2003''.
