Clerides announces accession and pledges to strive for solution

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Copenhagen, Dec 13 (CNA) Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides announced tonight the completion of the great national aim of Cyprus for accession to the EU but expressed his sadness that it was not possible to solve the islands political problem before joining the Union.

In a written statement read out at a press conference by Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, President Clerides says that our countrys accession to the EU provides us with the necessary certainty to take, over the next few weeks, daring measures that will help create a favourable climate for a settlement of our political problem.

Britain regrets failure to reach Cyprus agreement

    by Maria Myles

Copenhagen, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Britain has expressed regret that it was not possible to reach a negotiated settlement in Cyprus to enable a reunited country to join the European Union, a spokesman for the British Foreign Office told CNA today.

He expressed the hope that negotiations would continue and said it was important that all parties contribute to the effort for a settlement.

''It is a shame that the talks did not produce a settlement. UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has worked hard towards this goal,'' the spokesman said.
