Kofi Annan undecided on Cyprus

United Nations, Nov 6 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is still undecided as to his next move in the Cyprus peace process, as he himself has said.

As consultations on Cyprus continue at the UN seat, it has emerged that Annan has received letters on the matter from US President George Bush and British and Dutch Premiers, Toni Blair and Wim Kok, in which they express support for Annan's peace effort and a proposed UN solution plan for Cyprus.

Annan had a telephone conversation with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou with regard to Cyprus, who expressed his support for the UN chief's peace efforts and said any settlement should be in line with UN resolutions and the European Union laws and regulations.

A similar message was sent to Annan by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, who in a letter he stressed the importance of reaching a viable solution that would create a state that can function properly and take decisions with regard to the EU, which Cyprus is expected to join in 2004.

Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has welcomed a statement by European Union Commissioner Gunter Verheugen that the timeframe for Cyprus' accession will be observed, irrespective of the outcome of the UN peace effort to find a negotiated settlement.

The minister also said that Verheugen, whom he met in Brussels on Tuesday, reiterated that the EU will take a decision on Cyprus' accession at its December summit in Copenhagen.

European Parliament Committee adopts draft proposal on Cyprus

Brussels, Nov 6 (CNA) -- A European Parliament Committee has made a particular appeal to Turkey to lend its full support to efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus this year.

The Foreign Affairs Committee adopted Tuesday a draft proposal on Cyprus' progress report relating to enlargement, which said that a political settlement should allow the country's federal government and parliament to function fully at an international level.

The Committee reiterated its hope that a reunited Cyprus under a single sovereignty will accede to the EU and said that a settlement should be in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Cyprus praises UNRWA work

United Nations, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus has expressed appreciation for the important work the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is doing but said it regretted the worsening of the living conditions of Palestinian refugees.

George Kasoulides, Cyprus' representative to the Fourth Committee of the UN Assembly, said human beings are suffering enormously from the Middle East crisis but praised the continuous generosity of the international community, the donors and especially the self-sacrifice of the dedicated staff of UNRWA for the relief they bring to the Palestinian refugees.

''Cyprus, a country that shares close and friendly ties with our Near East neighbours, fervently hopes for lasting peace and security in the Middle East and firmly believes that we should preserve the backbone of the economic and social structure for the Palestinian People, in the hope for better days to come,'' Kasoulides said.

United Nations, Nov 6 (CNA) -- The UN special rapporteur for human rights in Iraq, Ambassador Andreas Mavrommatis, believes there is now a small window of opportunity to improve the situation in the country.

Speaking to CNA after he presented his report on the situation of human rights in Iraq to the Third Committee of the UN Assembly, he said following some statements about Kuwait, about the return of Kuwaiti archives and about the amnesty that has freed many prisoners, it is likely to see certain things being implemented.

Government expects solution plan

Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- The government believes it is possible that the UN will put forward a plan for a solution in Cyprus within the next few days or weeks, spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

''All indications are that we should expect a plan for a solution but we do not know when that will happen. Cyprus and Greece have launched a campaign to try and influence things in our favour,'' the spokesman said.

Switzerland hopes for a Cyprus settlement soon

Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here Wednesday the current international circumstances are most favourable for a lasting and viable solution of the Cyprus problem.

He made this statement while receiving the credentials of Switzerlands new ambassador to Cyprus, Thomas Litscher, who pledged his country will continue offering its support towards a comprehensive settlement of the division of Cyprus, which he hoped would be soon. At the same time, Litscher welcomed the imminent accession of Cyprus to the European Union (EU).

Thanking Switzerland for its support, Clerides said we expect that the Turkish side will demonstrate the necessary good will and negotiate honestly and constructively to achieve a lasting settlement in Cyprus, based on the relevant Security Council resolutions, which provide for a federal state with one undivided sovereignty, a single international personality, with the human rights of all citizens safeguarded.
