    Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto was received this morning by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    De Soto did not make any statements after the Presidential Palace meeting. He leaves tonight for Ankara, via Athens, where he will hold talks Thursday with Turkish government officials.

    New York, Oct 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Sotos Zackheos has denounced the unacceptable demands of the Turkish side for a Cyprus settlement and appealed to the Turkish leadership and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to listen ''to the yearning of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, and indeed all the people of Cyprus, to help find a solution which will enhance and safeguard conditions of peaceful cooperation amongst the two communities in a reunified island and will terminate the division of the country and its people.''

    Kasoulides holds meetings in Paris

    Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) Cyprus can bring together Europe and the Middle East to establish peace and promote economic development in the region, said Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, speaking before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly chaired by Edouard Balladur.

    Kasoulides, who is in the French capital for a three-day working visit also met his French counterpart Dominique de Villepin and discussed developments in the Cyprus problem and the islands EU accession course.

    Addressing Kasoulides, Balladur referred to the accession course and the economic development of Cyprus, which ranks first among the candidate countries. He also expressed the wish that a united Cyprus can enter the EU in 2004 and recalled the relevant decisions of the 1999 Helsinki European Council and the European Commission report of October 9, 2002, where it was stressed that Cyprus fulfils the Copenhagen political and economic criteria.

    Kasoulides described his meeting with French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin as very good and friendly, noting they discussed the Cyprus problem and the islands EU accession course.

    1630:CYPPRESS:06 Weston: widespread urgency for a settlement on Cyprus Larnaca, Oct 30 (CNA) US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Weston said he comes away from his last visit to the island with a widespread urgency for a settlement on the island now.

    In a brief statement to reporters at the end of his five-day visit to the island, Weston said he is somewhat more optimistic about prospects for a Cyprus settlement and that he was leaving for Berlin and then New York with a somewhat more optimistic feeling because of the sheer sense of urgency.

    This has been a very productive visit for me to Cyprus and one more visit than usual because of the urgency we feel in addressing the whole Cyprus question, he said.

    In a statement to CNA, a State Department official said the move would contribute to stability and security in the Aegean region.

    1850:CYPPRESS:09 Committee on Legal Affairs of Euro Parliament to visit Cyprus Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) Members of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market of the European Parliament arrive in Cyprus Wednesday for a two-day visit.

    They start their visit with a working breakfast Thursday with the head of the delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus, Adrian van der Meer.

    The EP delegation will then meet the Chairman of the Cyprus House Standing Committee on European Affairs, Tassos Papadopoulos and members of the committee.

    Before departing, the delegation will confer with Attorney-General Alecos Markides and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Sotiris Sotiriou.

    2030:CYPPRESS:10 Greek Cypriots & Turkish Cypriots urge for Cyprus settlement Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) An agreement on Cyprus before the European Council in Copenhagen in December ''is not only desirable, but also within reach,'' and succeeding in this would create a new relationship between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, said a statement issued after an unofficial meeting in Athens last week between eight Cypriots from both communities, hosted by the International Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO) and the Greek-Turkish Forum (GTF).

    Taking part from the Greek Cypriot side were Christos Stylianides, Androulla Vassiliou, Kate Clerides and Takis Hadjidemetriou and from the Turkish Cypriot side Mustafa Akinci, Vedat Celik, Ali Erel and Kutlay Erk.

    He said Annan informed him this morning, ''that it is his intention to try to see Mr. Denktash by the end of this week, if they can find a mutual time. So, I think he is hoping to visit him. This is going to be just a private visit to wish him quick recovery''.
