President sends message to Putin

Nicosia, Oct 26 (CNA) --- President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides sent yesterday a message to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, expressing his ''full support and solidarity for the fight against terrorism.''

He also expressed his sympathy to Putin and to the people of Russia.

The message was sent prior to the operation of the Russian security forces that freed the hostages, held by Chechen rebels.

French FM: settlement before Copenhagen not a percondition

Nicosia, Oct 26, (CNA) -- French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin has stressed that a political settlement of the Cyprus issue before the Copenhagen European Council in December is a ''fundamental issue'' but clarified that this is not a precondition for the island's accession to the EU.

Achieving a political settlement prior to the EU Council in Copenhagen is a fundamental issue, de Villepin said during a press conference in Luxembourg this week.

Cyprus awaits official Turkish, US statements on military exercises

Nicosia, Oct, 26 (CNA) --- Cyprus is still awaiting official statements from Ankara and Washington with regard to an agreement announced last night in Brussels to postpone military exercises by Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, scheduled to have taken place in the coming days.

''It seems that an agreement has been reached as regards the postponement of the military exercises'' Defence Minister Sokratis Hasikos told the press today.
