    Olgun: Committees will function as soon as Denktash recovers

    New York, Oct 23 (CNA) -- The two ad hoc bicommunal committees on technical matters, set up in the context of the UN-led peace talks, will get into action as soon as Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash recovers from the second operation, he underwent in a New York clinic last Sunday and he is in condition to at least discuss the preliminary set up and policy of the committees, Denktash's adviser Ergun Olgun told CNA.

    Olgun noted that Denktash, who underwent two surgeries at the Presbyterian University Clinic of Columbia, is not briefed on political news and "is cut off from the rest of the world" on doctors' advice.

    He said that Denktash is now recovering from the second operation, ''is in good condition and his vital functions are normal.''

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) --- Lynn Pascoe, Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs in the US State Department, expressed here today optimism that there is still enough time for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Pascoe, currently visiting the island, was received this morning by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, to discuss latest developments in the Cyprus question, as well as regional and international issues.

    Greek FM and UN envoy hopeful for Cyprus settlement

    Athens, Oct 23 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto have stated there is still a window of opportunity and a possibility for a settlement of the Cyprus problem so that Cyprus will accede to the EU united.

    Papandreou, who met De Soto yesterday in Athens for over two hours, noted that "we are now at a pivotal phase of developments in the Cyprus problem and at the end of Cyprus' EU accession course," expressing hope that "the small window which is open until the EU Copenhagen Summit (in December) will allow cooperation for a solution."

    He recalled the EU Helsinki conclusions for Cyprus which said that a solution to the Cyprus problem is not a precondition for the island's accession to the EU and noted that he told De Soto that a solution must respect UN principles, must be viable and in conformity with the acquis communautaire.

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has extended sincere congratulations to Prime Minister of Ireland, Bertie Ahern, on the positive outcome of the recent Irish referendum regarding the ratification of the Treaty of Nice.

    In a telegram to the Irish Prime Minister, President Clerides states that ''this historic decision constitutes a step towards the further enlargement of the European Union and also towards the establishment of lasting peace, security and prosperity for all of its citizens.''

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) -- Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs in the US State Department, Lynn Pascoe said here today the US is very supportive of a settlement of the Cyprus problem as soon as possible and is working very hard to that end.

    Pascoe was speaking to the press after meeting Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou who said the Americans have a clear picture of the benefits that will come out of Cyprus' accession to the EU for the people of the island as a whole and in particular for the Turkish Cypriots.

    UN weapons inspectors for Iraq to set up regional HQ in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides announced that United Nations weapons inspectors for Iraq will set up regional headquarters in Cyprus.

    He said the decision was approved at today's cabinet meeting and explained that an agreement on the matter had been reached with the United Nations Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC).

    Brussels, 23 Oct (CNA) -- Denmark, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, warned its 14 partners today that their crucial summit session in Brussels Thursday and Friday which is to focus on the financial aspects of enlargement of the EU with the accession of ten new members in 2004 ''could be a long meeting'' and could last until Sunday.

    ''We are determined to find solutions before we leave Brussels...This could be a long meeting and so the Danish delegation has made its hotel reservations through to Sunday morning,'' said a representative of the Danish EU presidency here this afternoon.

    EU assures accession course is progressing smoothly for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) Ambassador Adriaan Van Der Meer, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Cyprus, has assured Social Democrats leader, Yiannakis Omirou that Cyprus European Union accession course is progressing without any problems.

    The Ambassador said he expected the European Council which begins in Brussels tomorrow to reach a deal on the common positions on outstanding financial issues relating to enlargement, something that would enable final decisions to be taken in the Copenhagen summit in December.
