    Cyprus expresses thanks to Irish people

    Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus has expressed grateful thanks to the Irish people, who by their vote, brought the enlargement of the European Union one step closer.

    Commenting on the results of Saturday's referendum in Ireland, Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said in a written statement that ''one more obstacle has been overcome and the final decision to be taken in Copenhagen is now closer to us.''

    Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday 22/10/2002 to 23/10/2002

    The weather will be mainly fine with local cloud. The winds are expected to be Northeasterly to Southeasterly, light to moderate and the state of sea, slight.

    Maximum temperature: Arround 29C inland and over south coastal areas and 27C over west coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature: Arround 17C and over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday 24/10/2002 to 25/10/2002

    No significant change is expected on Thursday, but on Friday it will be partly cloudy, with risk of local showers.

    Larnaca, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has expressed great satisfaction with the result of the referendum in Ireland for the ratification of the EU Nice Treaty, noting that an important obstacle has been removed from the enlargement process.

    Larnaca, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said that Turkey seems to be more cautious as regards threats to annex Cyprus' Turkish occupied territories if Cyprus accedes to the European Union. He underlined that such threats cannot impede the country's accession course.

    Cyprus, a preferred candidate for EU accession

    Brussels, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus is among the top five most preferred candidate countries for European Union accession, a survey conducted in the Spring of 2002 has concluded, with Greece, Ireland and the Scandinavian countries expressing more support for the country's accession than other member states.

    According to the results of the survey, published today, 43 per cent of those questioned back Cyprus' accession, 34 per cent are against and 23 per cent did not express an opinion.

    Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- An estimated 7,500 people from both sides of the divide in Cyprus attended celebrations to mark UN day, yesterday at the Ledra Palace hotel, in the UN controlled buffer zone.
