President Clerides and officials pleased with parade

Nicosia, Oct 1 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides defended his decision not to show off the new Russian-made MIL-Mi35 attack helicopters at this year's military parade marking the island's 42nd independence anniversary, saying the helicopters are on the island and part of the new weaponry system which has not been displayed yet.

Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos backed the President's comments, adding it was done in view of this week's meetings in New York between Clerides, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Cyprus, while the Commander of the National Guard and Greece's Deputy Defence Minister praised this year's parade, noting it boosted moral.
