    Chief of Police resigns

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) -- Chief of Cyprus Police Force Andreas Angelides submitted his resignation this morning to President Glafcos Clerides.

    Angelides handed over a letter of resignation to the President during an hour-long meeting at the Presidential Palace.

    Speaking to the press afterwards he said that the reasons of his resignation were mentioned in his letter of resignation. He did not elaborate.

    He said that President Clerides had told him to ''return to his office''.

    Invited to comment on yesterday's resignation of Justice and Public Order Minister, Nicos Koshis, Angelides said ''I have nothing to say.''

    Britain wants reunited Cyprus to join EU

    London, Sep 25 (CNA) -- ''We have an historic chance this year to bring peace and prosperity to the Eastern Mediterranean by means of accession to the EU by a reunited Cyprus,'' British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw stated following a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Sukru Sina Gurel, in London yesterday.

    According to a Foreign Office Press release, Straw said that Cyprus was discussed during the meeting, adding ''Turkey and the UK strongly support the UN Secretary General's efforts to secure a settlement in Cyprus.''

    He described the meeting as ''a valuable opportunity for us to compare notes on prospects for a durable, comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, which meets the needs of both parties,'' British Foreign Secretary said.

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has accepted the resignations of Justice and Public Order Minister Nikos Koshis and Chief of Police Andreas Angelides.

    President Clerides has asked Angelides to stay in office until 29 September 2002.

    Government Spokesman comments on resignations

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) - President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides accepted here today the resignations of Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis and Chief of Police Andreas Angelides, because it is in the ''public interest'', Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said.

    Clerides asked the Police Chief to remain in office until September 29, a day before he was due to retire, to find a replacement. The President will appoint the new Police Chief soon, Papapetrou added.

    Refugees send memorandum to UN Chief on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) - The newly formed Union of Cypriot Refugees and Displaced Persons has sent a memorandum to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, saying that if a plan he may submit on a Cyprus settlement is not in accordance with the principles and parameters for a just solution, it will not be accepted.

    In its memorandum, to be notified to President Glafcos Clerides and political parties, the Union notes that if the plan does not outline a just solution, the refugees and displaced will ''denounce it at every international forum and struggle against it with any available means''.

    Archbishop Chrysostomos returns to Cyprus

    Larnaca, Sep 25 (CNA) - The primate of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, returned to the island tonight after a four-and-a-half month stay in Greek clinics in Athens. After his arrival, he was transported to the Archbishopric in Nicosia.

    The fully equipped air ambulance transported the Archbishop to Larnaca Airport along with his entourage, the Director of the Cardiac Department of Nicosia General Hospital, Costas Zambartas, a doctor from the ''Ygia'' clinic where he was recuperating in Athens, and Trimithounta Bishop Vassilios.

    Strasbourg, Sep 25 (CNA) - The ''Pro Merito'' medal and the title of the Honoured Associate of the Council of Europe (CoE) was presented here today to former Vice-President of CoE and recently President of the Cypriot delegation, Panayiotis Demetriou.

    ''The honour is also for my country,'' Demetriou said, noting that Cyprus ''is struggling to find a solution'' so that everyone is happy, prosperous and lives in the spirit of the European ideals.'' He further expressed the hope that ''this year will be a good year for Cyprus.''
