[05] OSCE Med working group proposes establishment of ad hoc committee1830:CYPPRESS:04OSCE Med group proposes establishment of ad hoc committee Limassol, Sep 10 (CNA) -- A working group of the Organisation for Security And Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) intends to propose setting up an ad hoc committee to deal with problems facing the Mediterranean. Announcing the results of a two-day meeting of the OSCE group, the head of the Cypriot delegation, deputy George Lillikas said if the suggestion is not accepted, then a forum will be established to discuss Mediterranean issues and submit them for debate at OSCE meetings. "This mechanism will allow us to bring Mediterranean issues to the OSCE and undertake initiatives for important issues, like Cyprus and the Middle East,", Lillikas added. Michel Voisin, Representative of the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly for Mediterranean Affairs said the conclusions of the meeting were unanimous, adding that all participants agreed that security and stability in the Mediterranean are a necessary prerequisite to achieve a balance throughout the OSCE. He further said the Cyprus issue is a serious matter and is on the Working Groups agenda. Representatives from the 15 Mediterranean OSCE participating states, as well as from the six Mediterranean Partners for Cooperation, were present at the Limassol meeting. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. The agreement was signed by Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou and Director General of the Maritime Transport of the Belgian Ministry of Transports, Michael Joseph.
