    UN envoy returns to Cyprus after meetings in Brussels

    Brussels, Sep 10 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus returns to Cyprus tonight, for the continuation of direct talks on the Cyprus problem, after a short break for the September 6 meeting in Paris between UN chief Kofi Annan, President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    United Nations, Sep 10 (CNA) - Yeorgios Pikis, President of the Cyprus Supreme Court, is the Republic's candidate for the post of a Judge of the International Criminal Court at the elections to be held next year.

    The candidature was presented by Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Ministry of Justice and Public Order Lazaros Savvides, at the First Assembly of the States parties to the Statute of the International Criminal Court.

    Washington, Sep 10 (CNA) -- The United States strogly supports the UN Secretary General's Good Offices Mission on Cyprus.

    This was stated by a State Department spokesman when asked to comment on the 6 September meeting in Paris of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    OSCE Med group proposes establishment of ad hoc committee

    Limassol, Sep 10 (CNA) -- A working group of the Organisation for Security And Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) intends to propose setting up an ad hoc committee to deal with problems facing the Mediterranean.

    Announcing the results of a two-day meeting of the OSCE group, the head of the Cypriot delegation, deputy George Lillikas said if the suggestion is not accepted, then a forum will be established to discuss Mediterranean issues and submit them for debate at OSCE meetings.

    "This mechanism will allow us to bring Mediterranean issues to the OSCE and undertake initiatives for important issues, like Cyprus and the Middle East,", Lillikas added.

    Michel Voisin, Representative of the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly for Mediterranean Affairs said the conclusions of the meeting were unanimous, adding that all participants agreed that security and stability in the Mediterranean are a necessary prerequisite to achieve a balance throughout the OSCE.

    He further said the Cyprus issue is a serious matter and is on the Working Groups agenda.

    Representatives from the 15 Mediterranean OSCE participating states, as well as from the six Mediterranean Partners for Cooperation, were present at the Limassol meeting.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

    President to attend ceremony for 11 September

    Nicosia, Sept 10 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will participate tomorrow in a special ceremony to commemorate the first anniversary of the tragic events of September 11 in New York and Washington, the US embassy here has announced.

    The President, who will be accompanied by Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros, will address a few words at the remembrance ceremony. US Ambassador Michael Klosson will also speak to his guests at the embassy.

    A moment of silence will be observed after the remarks by the President and the Ambassador, both of whom will then lay wreaths at the flag post in the embassy compound.

    Cyprus, Belgium, Luxembourg sign merchant shipping agreement

    Nicosia, Sep 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus, Belgium and Luxembourg signed here today a merchant shipping agreement, the first between Cyprus and countries, members of the European Union.

    The agreement was signed by Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou and Director General of the Maritime Transport of the Belgian Ministry of Transports, Michael Joseph.

    The agreement provides for equal treatment of vessels of all three countries' flags, when docked in the other's ports with respect to services offered.
