    Turkish Cypriots to emigrate due to Turkey's plans

    Nicosia, Sep 3 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriots are preparing to emigrate from the island due to Turkey's plans to annex the areas it occupies since 1974, according to Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Afrika", which adds that Turkey is planning to send more settlers to Cyprus to replace the emigrants.

    The daily accuses Turkey of blocking the way of the Turkish Cypriots towards a solution of the Cyprus problem and accession to the European Union and wonders: "For how long will the UN and the EU ignore the fact that Turkey keeps the Turkish Cypriots hostage for the sake of its own strategic interests?"

    In yesterday's issue, "Afrika" notes that the preconditions Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "lays on the table are not the views of the Turkish Cypriots but the preconditions of Ankara".

    Nicosia, Sep 3 (CNA) The medieval castle of Paphos, in western Cyprus, is preparing to welcome Giacomo Puccinis last opera Turandot from September 6-8, to be performed by the National Opera of Poland, within the framework of the Pafos Aphrodite Festival (PAF).

    Paphos Mayor and RAF chairman, Phidias Sarikas," told CNA that the festival upgrades and portrays Paphos and Cyprus abroad as a destination which hosts high-standard productions.

    He said already, next year another Puccini favourite, Tosca, will be presented with the cooperation of the famous Italian theatre, Arena di Verona.

    Nicosia, Sep 3 (CNA) - The second and last concert of the European Union Youth Orchestra was given last night in Nicosia, in the context of the International Festival "Kypria 2002", in the presence of President Glafcos Clerides.

    The concert, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy with the participation of the Choir of the Greek Radio and Television Network and the Choir of Makedonia, opened with the national hymn of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Anthem, also known as "Ode to Joy" from the 9th Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven.

    Also participating in the concert were soloists Inger Dam-Jensen (soprano), Hilary Summers (contralto), Klaus Schneider (Tenor) and Kyros Patsalides (baritone).

    Nicosia, Sep 3 (CNA)- Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou said here today that his ministry will continue to make every effort to ensure a transparent and fair tendering procedure for the concession contract for the development and operation of the Larnaka and Pafos International Airports.

    In his welcoming address to the two-day Bidders' Conference for the development of both airports, Neophytou said that during the conference members of the five pre-elected joint ventures will have the opportunity to be directly informed on the use and operation of Cypriot airports.

    "A transparent and fair tendering procedure will ensure that the Concession Contract will be awarded to the best-evaluated bidder," Neophytou said.

    Turkish handball team will travel to Cyprus via Athens

    Nicosia, Sep 3 (CNA) -- Turkish women's handball team Uskudar will travel to Cyprus for next week's game with Latsia women's handball team and will enter the country through a legal port of entry.

    The Turkish team will travel September 7 from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Larnaca International Airport via Athens and return to Turkey September 9, following the same route.

    US:New options and alternatives must be found for Cyprus

    Athens, Sep 3 (CNA) -- The United States believes that if the ongoing UN-led Cyprus peace talks do not bear fruit by mid-December, other options and alternatives must be examined, US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston said today.

    Weston, who met here with the Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis, said that these options and alternatives should be determined by the UN Secretary General.

    He noted that a solution to the Cyprus problem is urgent and stressed that the US believes that the opportunity offered now for Cyprus never existed in the past and this is partly due to Cyprus' forthcoming accession to the EU.
