Verbal representations have also been made to the UN Secretariat. In his letter to Annan, Zackheos stressed that these violations "run contrary to international law, as well as the Security Council resolutions on Cyprus" and called for their immediate cessation. In its letter to the Cyprus Federation, the Turkish Federation makes no reference to the first leg of the match, which is scheduled to take place on September 8 in Nicosia and is still pending because the Turkish team has said it would enter Cyprus through an illegal port of entry, a move that contradicts international rules and regulations. Charalambos Lottas, president of the Cyprus Federation, told CNA that in a letter he sent today to the European Handball Federation (EHF), he called on the Turks to clarify whether they intend to arrive on the island through a legal port of entry. The Turkish team is running the risk of paying a hefty penalty if it does not play by the internationally accepted rules.
