US House subcommittee approves resolution on Cyprus

Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) - The Subcommittee for Europe of the US House International Relations Committee has approved a resolution, which "expresses the sense of Congress that security, reconciliation and prosperity for all Cypriots can be best achieved within the context of membership of the European Union".

According to an American Hellenic Institute (AHI) press release, the resolution adds that "EU membership will provide significant rights and obligations for all Cypriots and for other purposes".

Leaders continue discussions on Cyprus and missing

Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met today, in the absence of their aides, with UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, in the context of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, as well as with UN chief's Acting Special Representative in Cyprus Zbigniew Wlosowicz to discuss the missing persons issue.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told CNA that Denktash would present his views on the issue of territory during his next meeting with President Clerides on Tuesday, July 30.

Papapetrou added that on the issue of missing persons, discussions will continue despite the fact that there are "difficulties and different opinions".

Asked why the aides of the leaders of the two communities were not present at today's meetings, Papapetrou explained that "on the issue of missing persons they meet alone with Wlosowicz".

Abducted Greek Cypriot sent to Turkey

Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Twenty-five-year-old Greek Cypriot Vassos Elia, from the village of Xylotympou, who was abducted by Turkish occupation forces on July 12 and held illegally in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic, was sent to Constantinople, Turkey, early this morning.

Deputy Police Chief of the Dhekelia British Bases, Theodoros Charlie, confirmed that, instead of releasing Elia at the Ledra Palace chekpoint in Nicosia, the occupation regime sent him to Constantinople at six o'clock this morning.

Government proclaims competition for marinas

Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism has announced that the issue of the island's marinas is entering its final stage, adding that after over a decade of hard work, the government is proclaiming an international competition for the development, operation, management and use of five marinas with the BOT system (Build, Operate, Transfer).

The Paphos Marina will be constructed at "Potima" area in Kissonerga and will have a capacity of 1.000 vessels.

The Limassol Marina will be built to the west of the old port and will also have a capacity of 1.000 vessels.

The Ayios Raphael Marina in Limassol will continue to operate with a capacity of 250 vessels.

In Larnaca, the existing Marina will be extended so that its current capacity of 450 vessels will expand to 1.000 vessels.

The Ayia Napa Marina will be constructed at "Loumata" area and will have a capacity of 600 vessels.

The Paralimni Marina will be built near the fishing shelter and will have a capacity of 250 vessels.

According to the press release, the marinas will help enhance maritime tourism, which will serve strategic goals for enriching the island's tourist product and improving seasonality.

The marinas of Cyprus are expected to have a comparative advantage to those of Greece, Turkey and Israel, due to the island's geographic position.

The projects are also expected to enhance other activities such as maritime sports and off-coast cruises, and create new jobs in the sectors of repairing, maintaining and servicing vessels.

The proclamation of the competition is published in the government's official gazette and in local and international newspapers.

Chambers of two communities to launch training programme

Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) - Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) President Vassilis Rologis said today that the EU-financed training programmes for small and medium enterprise (SME) staff of the two communities in Cyprus (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot) would begin in October.

He said EU funding reaches 1,5 million euros and noted that a person will be appointed to remain on the island and monitor the implementation of the project.

Rologis was speaking after a meeting in Nicosia of delegations of KEVE and the Turkish Cypriot chamber, in the presence of EU negotiator for Cyprus' accession Leopold Maurer.
