Clerides hosts dinner in honour of Lebanese counterpart

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) - President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides reassured his Lebanese counterpart, General Emile Lahoud, that with Cyprus' accession to the EU, Lebanon will have an additional friend in the Union but noted that "the window of opportunity of a solution of the Cyprus problem, which will allow all Cypriots to benefit from accession, is narrowing".

In an address to the state banquet in honour of Lebanese President General Emile Lahoud, who is currently visiting the island, President Clerides said justice must prevail if there is to be peace, adding that both Lebanon and Cyprus have endured for too long the injustices of the illegal use of force and live in an environment of constant threat and insecurity.

Lahoud said what truly binds Lebanon and Cyprus surpasses friendship and cooperation, and referred to the safe haven Cyprus provided to many Lebanese who found refuge away from strife-laden Lebanon.

Memorials and demonstrations mark invasion anniversary

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) - The wailing of air-raid sirens across the island broke the silence at dawn today, marking the 28th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion. With flags flying half-mast in the free areas of the Republic, Greek Cypriots flocked churches, where memorial services for those who fell and prayers for those missing were held.

With the sound of bells tolling mournfully in every single church, political parties and organisations put the final touches on demonstrations scheduled for later today, which will be wrapped up with tonight's pancyprian anti-occupation demonstration to be held at the Ledra Palace checkpoint in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia.
