Parties condemn 1974 coup - Commemoration services take place

Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- Commemorative church services took place today to mark the 28th anniversary of the military coup of 15 July 1974, that preceded the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Parliamentary parties issued statements to condemn the coup, engineered by the military junta ruling Greece at the time, and stressed their adherence to democratic principles.

Parties also said that lessons must be learnt from the events of July 1974, when the legal government of the late Archbishop Makarios was toppled, a development that gave Ankara a pretext to invade, purportedly to protect the Turkish Cypriot community on the island and restore the constitutional order.
