The other four army officers are Air Force Commander, Brigadier Stelios Demenegas, Lieutenant Nikos Georgiou and the two helicopter pilots, Flight Lieutenant Paris Athanasiades and Flank Officer Michalis Shiakallis. In a written statement Hasikos said Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides was briefed about the accident at the National Guards headquarters in Nicosia and expressed his deep sorrow and grief for the tragic accident and his condolences to their relatives of the deceased. The Minister said that Florakis and the other four army officers were aboard a helicopter which crashed near the village of Kouklia, Paphos. Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said after a meeting at the Presidential Palace, presided over by President Glafcos Clerides, that procedures to name a new National Guard chief were under way. He said Cypriot experts have already begun investigating the circumstances under which the accident occurred. Greek experts will join their Cypriot colleagues in the investigations. Invited to say whether the possibility of a sabotage has been ruled out, the Spokesman said "since an investigation is being conducted we have to look into all possibilities." He added, however, that all evidence indicate that it was an accident. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. He entered the Military Cadet Academy (Evelpidon) in 1962, he graduated in 1966 and was commissioned second Lieutenant in the Infantry. He attended Infantry School, the Unit Commander's School, the Parachutists School, the Physical Training School, the Armed Forces Special Weapons School, the Unconventional Warfare School, the Hellenic Army War College and the Hellenic National Defence College. He served in various national units and in Cyprus, he commanded sub-units and units of his branch for a long period and was also staff officer at formation level. He also commanded an Infantry Battalion and an Infantry Contingent. In 1994 he was promoted to Brigadier General and served as Deputy Commander in the XV Infantry Division and in the 50 Infantry Brigade as Commander. After being promoted to Major General in 1996, he was appointed Commander in the XVI Mechanized Infantry Division and then in the Hellenic Army War College. In 1999 he assumed the command of B Army Corps. Lt. General Florakis has been decorated with all the military distinctions as appropriate.
