    Cabinet decides on protection of specific areas in Akamas

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- The cabinet has designated three specific areas in the Akamas peninsula, on the northwestern coast, as protected locations where no development will take place. All three areas are spots were protected species of turtles, indigenous to the Mediterranean, live and hatch their eggs.

    "There will be mild and appropriate development, with respect and sensitivity to the environment, in the areas outside the state forest in Akamas," Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Costas Themistocleous said after Wednesday's cabinet meeting.

    He said land owners within the state forest will be compensated or have their property exchanged with other state or forest land.

    The cabinet decided to freeze the issue of new licence for safari and to review all existing ones, to exempt the Akamas peninsula from the annual Cyprus Rally, to move from the area all notices which were illegally put up and to spend 50,000 pounds to clean up the area.

    UN Secretary General confers with adviser on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had a 40 minute meeting Wednesday evening in Vienna with his special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto to discuss developments in the ongoing peace talks.

    "De Soto briefed the Secretary General and heard his input about how to move forward" with the negotiations, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard told CNA about the meeting. He said the UN did not intend to issue a statement on the meeting.

    Replying to questions, Eckhard said he was not aware of any plans for another meeting early next week between de Soto and the Secretary General.

    National Council meets on July 12 to evaluate talks

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) - The National Council will convene on July 12 under President Glafcos Clerides to evaluate the fourth round of UN-led direct talks between Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash aimed at solving the Cyprus problem.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today's cabinet meeting that the President "has called a new meeting of the National Council for July 12", in order to "further brief the Council and evaluate what has or has not emerged from the fourth round of talks that was wrapped up Tuesday".

    Government not concerned over Rasmussen's statements

    Nicosia, Jul 4 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that "there is no problem" with statements by Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen who said that one of the three stumbling blocks for European Union enlargement is the Cyprus problem.

    Papapetrou said it was important to hear Rasmussen, current EU Council president, reiterate the Helsinki European Council conclusions that a solution to the Cyprus problem is not a precondition for the island's accession to the EU.
