Environmentalists protest erection of antenna

Limassol, Jul 1 (CNA) -- Some 20 members of Cyprus Ecologists - Environmentalists Movement started yesterday evening a peaceful demonstration against the erection of a huge new antenna by the British Bases, at Akrotiri Salt Lake, within the Bases area, near the southern coastal town of Limassol.

The demonstrators, holding pickets saying "Antennas = Death", "Antennas = Cancer", "Save the Akrotiri wildlife sanctuary" blocked the road outside the Bases and deny access to British Bases military and police vehicles as well as to diggers and other vehicles which the British will have to use to build the antenna.

British Bases Administrative Secretary Gavin Barlow said yesterday the Bases were ready to proceed with the building of the antenna, named "Pluto", by clearing up some of the area.

Alvaro de Soto to brief Annan on Cyprus

Nicosia, Jul 1 (CNA) UN Secretary Generals special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has said that the major breakthrough the UN had hoped for by the end of the June target date is not going to happen.

The top UN envoy on Cyprus leaves Wednesday for Vienna, where he will meet and brief Kofi Annan on the course of the direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

He then flies on to New York where Tuesday, 9th July, he will brief the Security Council, whose current president, Britains permanent representative Sir Jeremy Greenstock, will make a statement after the briefing.

"We are facing a conundrum and I have to discuss this with the Secretary General," de Soto told CNA, noting that so far the two sides "have relied on bilateral negotiation" at the talks.

The two sides, he said, seem to find it difficult to negotiate by themselves.

Iranian Minister arrives tomorrow on official visit

Nicosia, Jul 1 (CNA) -- Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamal Kharrazi arrives here tomorrow, and not today as initially announced, on a two-day official visit.

He will sign with Cypriot Ministers an Agreement on Cultural, Educational and Scientific Cooperation, a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation against the Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and an Agreement on Merchant Shipping.

Demonstrators withdraw from Akroti area

Limassol, Jul 1 (CNA) -- Demonstrators who protested the erection of a huge mast at Akrotiri British Bases area, near the southern town of Limassol, withdrew from the area. The 20 demonstrators had been dragged earlier by British Bases policemen off a road to a field where they were surrounded by a police force.

The demonstrators camped overnight outside the antennae site to prevent heavy machinery entering the place. Around 9.30 this morning British Bases policemen arrived at the area and tried to drag them away. This sparked incidents as demonstrators resisted but were finally confined to a field next to the antennae site. Dozens of British soldiers arrived at the area to prevent anyone from entering the site.

House votes in tax reforms

Nicosia, Jul 1 (CNA) - The House of Representatives plenary today voted 15 bills into law, amending the Republic's taxation framework and regulating procedures and criteria for grants and other social benefits to low income people.

With the new taxation, Value Added Tax jumps 3 percent to 13 percent, with a provision to reach 15 percent on January 1, 2003. Tax-free income is increased from six to nine thousand pounds and in 2004 this ceiling will rise to ten thousand pounds. The contribution to the National Guard Fund is abolished as of today.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jul 1 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

On Tuesday (July 2) and Wednesday (July 3), the weather will be mainly fine at first but later clouds will develop over the mountains, which may yield thundery showers in the afternoon. Mist or foggy patches and low clouds are expected towards dawn.

Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly, fresh, during the day, and northwesterly, light to gentle, during the night.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius inland and 30 degrees along the coast, with a minimum of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday (July 4) and Friday (July 5), no significant changes are expected.
