Clerides: Denktash backtracks, ordered by Ankara

Larnaca, Jun 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said that all four core issues of the Cyprus problem, namely governance, security, territory and property, have been discussed during the UN-led direct talks and they will be addressed again since the two sides' positions have not been bridged.

Speaking prior to his departure for Seville, Spain, where he will attend tomorrow a working lunch of the leaders of the EU member states and the EU applicant states, in the framework of the EU Summit, President Clerides said he will have three more meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the last of which will take place on July 2. UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto will then fly to New York to report to the UN Secretary General.

Commenting on Denktash's allegations that the Greek Cypriot side was trying to force the Turkish side to withdraw from the talks, President Clerides noted "that no major effort is needed to make Denktash leave since he leaves by himself" as he did in 2000 when he withdrew from the proximity talks that were then held in Geneva.

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

He said the European Parliament strongly supports Cyprus' accession to the EU and that the optimum solution would be a unified Cyprus joining.

Asked by CNA to what extent the lack of progress in UN peace talks to solve the Cyprus problem could complicate matters, Cox referred to his recent visit to Cyprus and the discussions he had on the island with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, noting that "I can certainly attest to the fact that there is a very strong desire by President Clerides to, if possible, find a way to bring Cyprus at ease with itself into the European Union".

Speaking at a press conference he gave after discussions with the European Council members meeting in Seville, Cox noted that "there is still time and so one still has some hope".
