The President, who received 20 scholars currently in Cyprus for the establishment of the Cyprus Institute, has instructed that procedures be accelerated to operate the research centre as soon as possible. Minister of Education and Culture Ouranios Ioannides, who was present at the meeting, said that the President announced the immediate grant of state land in the Kornos area, in the Nicosia district, to construct the building that will house the Institute. Ioannides said the cost of establishing the Institute is about half a million euros, which will be obtained from the Cyprus Development Bank. It is also backed by the EU. Later on, a two-day gathering of scholars and senior research managers began under the title "The Cyprus Institute: Design and Scope - A Convocation of International Scholars", during which Ioannides said intensive efforts are being made to establish Cyprus as "an international and regional educational centre". Papamichael, who was appointed rector in 1999, will continue to exercise his duties as rector until 21 June until the vice rector returns to Cyprus.
