    Washington: Cyprus agreement possible by end of June

    Washington, May 17 (CNA) -- US government supports UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's statement that between now and the end of June the core issues on the Cyprus question can be resolved, provided that there is the necessary political will.

    US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said during his daily briefing that there is a need for more urgency regarding the talks on the Cyprus problem and expressed Washington's strong support towards Secretary General's visit to Cyprus and to his statements before leaving the island yesterday after a two-day working visit.

    United Nations, May 17 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his statement before leaving Cyprus said he was sobered by the challenge faced by the two sides to reach an agreement but even more deeply convinced that this is the time to press on, UN Secretary General's spokesman Fred Eckhard has said.

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) -- Ahmed Maher, Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, arrives in Cyprus on Sunday, for a brief visit. He will meet with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

    According to the programme of his trip, issued here today by the Foreign Ministry, Maher will visit Ledra Street in the centre of the capital on the ceasefire line at 10:00, while two hours later he will meet with Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides at the residence of Egyptian Ambassador to Cyprus Omar Metwally.
