Washington, May 15 (CNA) -- US President George Bush has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan by which he expresses his overwhelming personal support to the UN process and to Annan's direct involvement in efforts for a settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides is meeting this morning with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Annan arrived at the Presidential Palace at 1025 local time (0725 GMT) accompanied by his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto.

President Clerides, escorted by the Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros and his Office Director Christos Patsalides, welcomed the UN chief in the Presidential Palace yard.

Clerides and Annan shook hands and entered the Presidential Palace.

The Clerides-Annan meeting is attended by Kouros and De Soto.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Black-dressed Cypriot women holding photographs of their beloved ones, missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, gathered outside the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia, where Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan were discussing efforts to resolve the protracted Cyprus problem.

They demanded the determination of the fate of the missing persons and restoration of human rights in Cyprus.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan met here today for approximately one and a half hour.

At 1212 local time (0912 GMT) Clerides and Annan stepped outside the Presidential Palace accompanied by their aides. Clerides and Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros shook hands with Annan and his Special Advisor on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said he was "absolutely" satisfied with a 90-minute long meeting here today with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The President also said that he discussed ways to accelerate the UN-led peace talks at this morning's meeting, which he described as "very good."

Annan, who arrived here Tuesday, is seeing Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash this afternoon in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Nicosia.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has said he is "absolutely" pleased with a meeting here today with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

He also said he discussed ways and means to speed up the pace of the UN-led direct talks, which began in mid January this year.

"We had a very good meeting, we discussed how we can accelerate the negotiations," the President told dozens of journalists, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Turks and others who were covering the meeting.

The Secretary General, he said, will have "a meeting this afternoon with (Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf) Mr Denktash on the same to see how to accelerate the talks."

Asked if he was satisfied, he replied "absolutely."

Invited to identify the main obstacle in the peace talks, the President said he thought it would not be "wise" at this moment for each side to say what the main obstacle is.

"Let us wait to see if the Secretary General will succeed in getting understanding from both sides how to accelerate the talks," he said.

The morning meeting lasted 90 minutes and was attended by close aides of the two men, Annan's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who conducts the direct talks, and Under-Secretary to the President Pantelis Kouros.

Later this evening President Clerides will have a joint meeting with Annan and Denktash, before retiring to enjoy a dinner hosted by the Secretary General at the residence of his Acting Special Representative and Chief of Mission here Zbigniew Wlosowicz.

Relatives of missing persons appeal to UN Secretary General

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- "Annan, we want our children back," chanted black-clad Greek Cypriot women, relatives of missing persons, who lined the street outside the Presidential Palace to greet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and press on with their demand to have the fate of their loved ones established.

Some 25 women, wives, daughters and mothers of missing persons, staged a peaceful demonstration holding a huge banner in English that read "Your Excellency, we demand respect for human rights in our island. 200.000 refugees in Cyprus."

"His motorcade slowed down and we shouted out loud that we want our children back. Mr Annan greeted us and that pleases us," Androulla Aristodemou, one of the women, said.

Kyrenia Bishop calls on the UN to impose sanctions on Turkey

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Bishop of the Turkish occupied town of Kyrenia, Pavlos, has sent a letter to UN Secretary Kofi Annan, who is currently visiting Cyprus, by which he underlines that "the compulsion of Turkey to conform with Security Council resolutions will be achieved only through the imposition of sanctions which the UN can impose if the organisation truly seeks a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem."

The Bishop noted that in order for the UN to be effective "you should demand the withdrawal of all Turkish troops and Turkish settlers and the return of all refugees to our homes and properties".

UN Secretary General meets Turkish Cypriot leader

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in Cyprus for 48 hours, met this afternoon with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

The meeting took place in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Nicosia, the world's last divided capital.

After the two-hour meeting, Denktash said he had a sincere exchange of views with the UN Secretary General, adding he hoped that Kofi Annan had benefited from this exchange of views.

Annan did not make any statement following the same procedure as earlier today when he met Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, at the Presidential Palace, in the government-controlled southern part of Nicosia.

The UN chief had gone to the occupied part of Nicosia through the Ledra Palace check point, accompanied by his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who conducts the Clerides-Denktash direct talks.

Members of the extremist group known as "Grey Wolves" gathered outside Denktash's residence, where the meeting took place, holding Turkish flags and placards which, among others, read "The direction we follow is that of Turkey's". They chanted slogans against the European Union.

Annan will have a joint meeting this evening with Clerides and Denktash followed by a dinner to be given by the Secretary General at the residence of his Acting Special Representative in Cyprus and Chief of Mission Zbigniew Wlosowicz, in the UN-controlled buffer zone.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan took a walk today in the neighbourhood surrounding the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, where he is staying, and passed from the Cyprus News Agency's offices, which are close by, at around five o'clock in the afternoon, local time. He was accompanied by tight police security and followed by his car.

CNA reporters, on duty at the time, followed Annan and invited him to visit the Agency's offices to offer him a drink. Annan replied "some other time" and said "efharisto", Greek for "thank you".

He said he had taken a walk before attending tonight's dinner with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said today that he likes Cyprus "very much", before entering the residence of his Deputy Special Representative in Cyprus Zbigniew Wlosowicz, where he is hosting a dinner for Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Before dinner, Annan held talks with the leaders of the two communities. The dinner is also attended by Annan's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto and Wlosowicz.

Annan arrived at Wlosowicz's residence at 1925 local time (1625 GMT). President Clerides arrived five minutes later. The UN Chief greeted President Clerides at the front door and shook hands with him.

A couple of minutes later, Denktash arrived and offered Annan a plant. The UN Secretary General shook hands with Denktash and returned indoors.

Soon afterwards, all three came out to be photographed shaking hands.
