    Defence Minister assures of Greek support on EU defence force matters

    Larnaca, May 13 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos believes that Greece is not prepared, under any circumstances, to allow plans for the establishment of a European Union rapid deployment force to leave Cyprus at Turkey's mercy.

    "Greece opposes strongly the joint Anglo-American-Turkish plan, known as the Ankara document, and as the Greek premier and his defence minister have said, there is no way Athens will have the EU accept this paper," Hasikos said, on his way to Brussels to attend a meeting of EU defence ministers and their counterparts from candidate countries.

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 14/05/2002 to 15/05/2002

    On Tuesday it will be cloudy with showers or local thunderstorms. Winds moderate south-westerly and the state of sea moderate.

    Maximum temperature around 23 C inland and over costal areas.

    Minimum temperature 9 C inland and around 11 C over coastal areas.

    On Wednesday the weather will be mainly fine but locally cloudy with isolate showers inland, in the afternoon. Winds will be light to moderate westerly and the state of sea slight to moderate.

    Maximum temperature around 25 C inland and over coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature 10 C inland and around 12 C over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 16/05/2002 to 17/05/2002

    Local showers inland in the afternoon. Small increase in temperature is expected.

    US: progress towards comprehensive settlement can take various forms

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- Washington's long standing policy is to achieve a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, US Ambassador Donald Bandler said here today, without excluding the possibility of seeing an intermediate arrangement in place as a step towards the final goal.

    Bandler also said that tomorrow's visit to the island by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan offers the chance to "catalyse some of that political will that is needed to begin getting tangible results."

    Speaking after an hour-long meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, he said "we had a fairly long and broad ranging meeting, we touched upon a number of subjects and the Cyprus problem is one of them."

    Cyprus shows solidarity with Palestinian people

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The representative of the Palestinian Authority in Nicosia Samir abou Ghazaleh praised Cyprus today for hosting temporarily 13 of the Palestinians who left the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem last Friday.

    He said Cyprus has shown a unified stance in support of the "just rights" of the Palestinian people.

    Cyprus hopes Annan's visit would create momentum in peace effort

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expects that tomorrow's visit to Cyprus by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would create a momentum in the ongoing peace effort and help move the direct talks make headway.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today that he anticipates that Annan would apply his diplomatic and political skills, afforded to him by his high post, to move the peace talks forward quickly.
