    United Nations, Apr 27 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Republic has signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

    Cyprus rejects Denktash's assertion in letter to Annan

    United Nations, Apr 27 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus has sent a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, rejecting the "various incorrect assertions" in Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's letter to Annan on 6 March, regarding the Cyprus' take over of Search and Rescue Operations (SAR) within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR).

    In the Cyprus government's letter to Annan which was circulated as a document of the General Assembly and the Security Council, Charge d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations George Kasoulides, states that Denktash makes various incorrect assertions about "unilateral changes of the provisions for search and rescue (SAR) services within the Nicosia flight information region (FIR)".

    Weston: Better sense of state of play in direct talks for Cyprus

    Larnaca, Apr 27 (CNA) -- US State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston said here today that he had a better sense of the state of play in the UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, following the meetings he held on the island, as well as in Athens and Ankara earlier this week.

    In statements on his departure for Brussels, Weston said he was satisfied with the "very useful" discussions he had here and said that in Brussels he will have routine consultations with European colleagues on Cyprus and later on he will go to New York where the issue will be examined by the Security Council.

    Group of Luxembourg express content over accession negotiations

    Paphos, Apr 27 (CNA) -- The Chairmen of the Committees on European Affairs of the Parliaments of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia (Group of Luxembourg) greet with satisfaction the decision of the European Parliament, envisaging that the Copenhagen European Council in December 2002 will decide and will name the candidate States, to be accepted as member states of the EU.

    In their Joint Statement having concluded their two-day Meeting in the western coastal town of Paphos which started yesterday, they express satisfaction with the progress of accession negotiations between the EU and the candidate states, and that the ratification procedure will be completed in time for the participation of the candidates approved for accession in the European Parliament elections in 2004.
