    Cypriot FM to seek to speak to Solana over Cyprus' entry into EU

    Valencia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will seek to speak to Javier Solana, High Representative of the European Union for foreign and defence policy, with regard to remarks the EU official has made about Cyprus accession to the EU.

    Kasoulides stressed that the application for EU membership was made by the Republic of Cyprus and accession negotiations, between the government and Brussels, are conducted on behalf of the entire island.

    President says Solana not the one to decide

    Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said that the EU's High Representative for foreign and defence policy, Javier Solana, "does not decide on Cyprus' accession to the EU".

    President Clerides was commenting on a statement by Solana that if a solution to the Cyprus problem is not found, then only the "Greek Cypriot part" of Cyprus would become a member of the Union. "Those who decide, assure us that the whole of Cyprus will accede", the President noted.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the government believed Solana's approach was wrong and would ask for explanations from Solana himself and the EU.

    Cyprus to raise Barcelona chapters at EuroMediterranean meeting

    Valencia, Apr 22 (CNA) - Cyprus is set to raise issues relating to the second and third chapters of the Barcelona process, namely the economic and financial affairs and social, cultural and human affairs, during discussions in the context of the fifth EuroMediterranean Ministerial Conference, that gets underway here this afternoon.

    Cyprus believes in the promotion of a sister banking institution to the European Investment Bank, which would encourage investment and give out loan guarantees to countries of the Mediterranean basin.

    Translated into Turkish will be the most important news items from the daily output of CNA. These items will be available on CNA's website at www.cna.org.cy and may be freely accessed, downloaded and used by interested media and individuals.

    News in Turkish will cover not only developments in the Cyprus problem, but also developments relating to the accession of Cyprus to the EU, economic and social activities in Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) - President of the Slovak Republic Rudolf Schuster expressed here today his county's support in Cyprus' efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and expressed hope that there will be in the future a "major change" in this political problem.

    Schuster was speaking to the press after official talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and representatives from both countries, on the first official visit of a President of Slovakia to Cyprus.
