    Christofias discusses Cyprus problem with US officials

    Washington, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias met here yesterday with US President's Adviser on National Security Condoleezza Rice and US Deputy Assistant on National Security Stephen Hadley, whom he briefed on developments in the Cyprus question.

    Speaking to CNA afterwards Christofias expressed satisfaction with his talks with Rice Hadley, noting that the American senior officials showed understanding for the positions he outlined and pledged to continue more intensively their contacts with Turkish officials "to indicate that it is time for a solution to the Cyprus problem, for Cyprus' reunification and its accession to the European Union."

    Clerides: Israeli forces must withdraw immediately

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government supports UN resolutions and Security Council recommendations for peace in the Middle East and asks for the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the Palestinian territories.

    The Cyprus stance was set out here today by President Glafcos Clerides while addressing participants of a two-day UN International Meeting in Support of the Middle East Peace convened in Nicosia by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

    Chief negotiator welcomes EU Commissioner's remarks

    Larnaca, Apr 17 (CNA) -- George Vasiliou, Cyprus' chief negotiator with the European Union, welcomed here today a call by the EU enlargement Commissioner to the Turkish side for progress on Cyprus to avoid political and economic isolation of the Turkish Cypriots when the island joins the Union.

    Speaking on departure for Belgium, Vasiliou said two more chapters in the accession negotiations, taxation and regional policy, will close provisionally on Friday at the 16th meeting of the Intergovernmental Conference, leaving two the chapters of agriculture and competition to be closed.

    Worldwide events to promote Cyprus' civilisation

    New York, Apr 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' cultural heritage and the country's 9,000 old civilisation will be the focus of a series of events to be organised over the coming months in the US and Europe by Greece, Cyprus and their respective overseas communities.

    The culmination of these functions will be a "Cyprus Week" in New York to promote Cyprus' civilisation and the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Magriotis has told a press conference here.
