    United Democrats reelect leadership

    Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) -- George Vassiliou was reelected Sunday unopposed to the post of party president of the United Democrats (EDI) and his chief assistants have retained their posts, some a marginal difference from their opponents.

    Michalis Papapetrou was reelected Deputy president with 264 votes (85,4 per cent) against 45 votes (14,6 per cent) of his opponent Christos Charalambides. Papapetrou holds the post of the Government Spokesman.

    George Christofides was reelected first vice president of EDI. He was reelected with 160 votes (51,9 per cent) against 148 votes (48,1 per cent) of his opponent Praxoula Antoniadou Kyriakou.

    New York, Apr 15 (CNA) -- The speaker of the Greek parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis has told a huge gathering here to commemorate Greek independence day that American ideals of freedom and justice are being violated in Cyprus by Turkey.

    Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, who attended the commemoration on Sunday, said that Cyprus will at the end of the day gain its freedom from Turkish occupation and see justice prevail with the support of the Greek nation.

    Israeli Embassy changes reception venue

    Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) - The Israeli Embassy in Cyprus has changed the venue of a reception to be held on April 18 for the 54th anniversary of the independence of Israel.

    When asked by CNA, the Embassy did not comment on the fact that the reception will be held at Ambassador Michael Eligal's residence and not at Hilton Hotel, as originally planned.

    Spokesman: Cem's remarks confirm intransigent stance

    Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) -- The backing to the creation of two separate states in Cyprus, which Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem expressed in an interview, confirms how intransigent the Turkish side actually is, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has said.

    Papapetrou said that the thinly veiled threats which Cem leveled at Cyprus, in the event of joining the European Union prior to a political settlement, are counterproductive and pointed out that the philosophy of two states is contrary to EU wishes as well.

    Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Ôuesday and Wednesday: 16/4/2002 to 17/4/2002

    Ïn Tuesday the weather will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain. On Wednesday it will be partly cloudy. The wind will be southeast to southwest 4 to 5BF and the state of sea moderate. The maximum temperature will range from 22C on coastal areas to 25C inland and the minimum will range from 13C inland to 15C on coastal areas.

    CSE President's decision to quit is final

    Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) - Paris Lenas, who today resigned from the position of Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) board President, told CNA that his decision was "final".

    Lenas cited "moral order and authority clashes" as the reasons behind his resignation, adding that he intends to continue being involved in Stock Exchange matters and to become a consultant to companies already in CSE.

    Brussels, Apr 15 (CNA) - The European Union has urged Turkey to support the direct talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to solve the Cyprus problem and notes the importance of reaching a settlement by June, in view of the EU's enlargement timetable.

    The EU adds it would want a united Cyprus with a single voice to become a member and that it would be prepared to assist in the implementation of the acquis communautaire after a solution.
