Australian FM: We want one Cyprus, member of the EU

Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) -- Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has said Cyprus's accession to the European Union will be a very important development, adding that his country is looking forward to seeing Cyprus an EU member.

He also said Canberra wishes to help in any way it can towards a just settlement of the political problem on the island for the sake of the people of Cyprus.

US State Department:Cyprus enforces tough counternarcotics laws

Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus legislation carries heavy penalties for drug related offences and maintains "effective and thorough" supervision of the country's offshore sector, according to a US State Department report on narcotics and money laundering, which also says that the Republic's anti-money laundering legal framework meets international standards.

The report notes the excellent cooperation between Cyprus and the US on the issues under review, enumerates law enforcement efforts being taken and reiterates that Washington recognizes only the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

FIFA President very happy with Cyprus football

Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - FIFA President Joseph Blatter, here on a two-day official visit, has said he is very happy with the Cyprus football and described the newly built GSP stadium in Nicosia's southern outskirts as "a real jewel".

Speaking at a press conference here today, Blatter said that football offers hope and it could provide hope in the effort for a solution to the Cyprus problem, but stressed that "in no way can football make the first step because this must be made by the political leadership".

Earlier today the head of soccer's world governing body was received by President Glafcos Clerides and visited the ceasefire line in Nicosia, and expressed his sorrow that in the 21st century, "where communication and dialogue should be very easy, there still exist in Europe one divided city".
