    UN top envoy briefs "big five" - National Council meets

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) -- As the island's political leadership meets today to assess the outcome of the UN-led direct talks, which started here in mid January, in New York UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, who has been conducting these discussions, is to brief the five permanent members of the Security Council.

    Defence Minister: Turkey strengthens its occupation forces

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos has revealed that the Turkish occupation forces have strengthened their military capability in Cyprus' northern areas by bringing illegally into the country an artillery battalion.

    "Last week Turkey brought into the country illegally an artillery battalion, comprising twelve 155 millimetre guns with a 30 kilometre range and a ship loaded with ammunition to back the battalion," Hasikos has said.

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Ôuesday and Wednesday 26/2/2002 to 27/02/2002

    Fine weather with local cloud. Wind will be northwesterly moderate on Tuesday but slight to moderate on Wednesday. The state of sea will be moderate.

    Maximum temperatures: 17C inland and around 19C over coastal areas. Minimum temperatures: 8C inland and around 10C over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 28/02/2002 to 1/2/2002 Fine weather: Small increase in temperature is expected.

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) -- British MP, Lord Dholakia, said here today that the EU itself would give a scope of advancement to the UN-led direct talks on Cyprus, held since 16 January, 2002, between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA)- European Union Chief Negotiator with Cyprus, Leopold Maurer said here today Cyprus was progressing quite well in its accession negotiations, adding that the chapters of the acquis communautaire still remaining open for Cyprus are Taxation, Competition, Agriculture, Regional Policy and Financial and Budgetary Provisions.

    Maurer was speaking to the press after his meeting with Cyprus' Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou, who on his part said Cyprus' House of Representatives shows no delay in approving bills aiming at the country's harmonisation with the acquis communautaire, adding that the most important of these bills, that has not yet been approved, is the one concerning taxation.

    Nicosia, Feb 25 (CNA) - Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos today presented representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Cyprus, Nourredine Kadra, with the amount of about nine thousand pounds (1 CY pound is trading at about 1,5 US dollars), which are the proceeds of a collection in Nicosia churches, to help the international food telemarathon organised by FAO.

    Papantoniou: Greece will back Cyprus militarily

    Athens, Feb 25 (CNA) - Greek Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou has assured that Greece is determined to back the Republic of Cyprus in the military sector and stressed that securing Cyprus' accession to the European Union is the top national aim of his country.

    Speaking after a meeting with members of the Cyprus House of Representatives Defence Committee, Papantoniou said Athens was closely following developments in Nicosia and reiterated that "we are present, strong and supporters in the effort of the Cyprus people for the island's accession to the EU".

    Papantoniou added that with the Cypriot parliamentarians he discussed the face-to-face talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, and reviewed the defence cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, through their joint defence pact.
