    Barnet welcomes Cyprus talks in resolution

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) - The London Borough of Barnet 60-member Council last night approved a resolution, welcoming the commencement in January 2002 of direct talks, under UN aegis, between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to solve the Cyprus problem, and urges British Prime Minister Tony Blair to intensify efforts in this direction.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- Nicosia and Athens have continuous contact and consultations in view of next week's meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem in Constantinople (Istanbul), on the sidelines of the Joint European Union - Organisation of Islamic Conference Forum, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    "Greece has repeatedly said that there cannot be any normalisation of relations with Turkey without a fair settlement in Cyprus," the spokesman said, adding that any attempt by Greece and Turkey to iron out their differences and create a better climate is something which inadvertently could facilitate the Cyprus peace effort.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today that Britain's special representative for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, who is due to visit the island between 12 - 13 February, is not expected to bring any proposals with regard to the Cyprus question, adding that his visit cannot be related to any specific aspect of the Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- A memorandum on air transport was signed here today between Cyprus and the United Kingdom. It was the result of talks between officials of the Ministry of Communications and Works and the British Ministry of Transport, which were completed today.

    President Clerides - Denktash meeting ends

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met for the tenth time since January 16 in Nicosia this afternoon, in the context of direct talks taking place in the presence of UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto.

    The meeting, which took place in a building near the UN-controlled Nicosia airport, lasted about 90 minutes. Discussions were expected to continue on the issue of security.

    The President Clerides was accompanied by his advisers, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros.

    Direct talks, under UN auspices, are taking place without any preconditions, with all issues on the table, and on the understanding that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.

    Direct talks meetings rescheduled in the coming week

    Nicosia, Feb 6 (CNA) -- Meetings in the framework of UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot Rauf Denktash, that began on 16 January, have been rescheduled for the next ten days.

    According to CNA sources, the meeting scheduled to take place next Friday will begin at 16:00 instead of 17:00 as initially agreed.
