    Clerides and Denktash launch intensive talks

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash launch here today, at the presence of UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto, a series of intensive direct talks, aiming to reach a negotiated settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus has submitted to the UN Security Council its report to the UN pursuant to Security Council resolution 1373 on the fight against terrorism. Cyprus stresses that the fight against international crime, particularly terrorism, through international cooperation is one of its foreign policy top priorities.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday and Wednesday (Jan 22 and 23), the weather will be mainly fine with probable showers over the mountains. Winds will be westerly to northwesterly, light to moderate during the night, and moderate to strong in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 4 to 15 degrees Celsius inland, and 7 to 17 degrees Celsius along the coast.

    On Thursday and Friday (Jan 24 and 25), the weather will be mainly fine and temperatures are expected to increase.

    The sea temperature will be 15 degrees Celsius.

    by Athina Arsalidou Strasburg, Jan 21 (CNA) - Cyprus' accession to the European Union is a powerful factor in reaching a political settlement to the Cyprus question, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Lord Russel Johnston told CNA today, adding that a political accommodation will obviously alter Turkey's attitude to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decisions.
