Ecevit describes "good omen" the start of Cyprus talks

Washington, Jan 18 (CNA) -- The beginning of the direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot Rauf Denktash, is "a good omen," Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit has said, adding that "it may not be easy to reach a solution that would satisfy both sides very soon, but the concept of dialogue itself can be of help."

FAO regional officer visits Cyprus to prepare Conference

Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) - The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Regional Director for Europe, Claude Forthomme will be visiting Cyprus over the next few days, to discuss arrangements for the 23rd Regional Conference Cyprus will host at a ministerial level between May 27 to 30.

First resident Spanish Ambassador arrives soon

Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) - The first resident Spanish Ambassador to Cyprus arrives on the island at the end of January, to assume his duties, the Spanish Charge d' Affaires Enrique Mora has told CNA.

Mora, who has been in Cyprus for a year now, said that Ignacio Garcia Valdecasas was appointed by Spain's cabinet, "thus filling an institutional gap from which our country was suffering".

An announcement from Madrid reads that Spain, which currently holds the six-monthly rotating presidency of the European Union, "could no longer put off opening an embassy in Nicosia and wanted to do so while she held the presidency of the European Union".

Spain cited Cyprus' seven-year diplomatic presence in Madrid, business ties and a desire to improve cultural links as reasons for opening up the embassy.

Madrid's ambassadors to Lebanon have also been accredited to Cyprus. CNA/RG/MM/2002
