Mora, who has been in Cyprus for a year now, said that Ignacio Garcia Valdecasas was appointed by Spain's cabinet, "thus filling an institutional gap from which our country was suffering". An announcement from Madrid reads that Spain, which currently holds the six-monthly rotating presidency of the European Union, "could no longer put off opening an embassy in Nicosia and wanted to do so while she held the presidency of the European Union". Spain cited Cyprus' seven-year diplomatic presence in Madrid, business ties and a desire to improve cultural links as reasons for opening up the embassy.
