    House approves establishment of bioethics committee

    Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNA) -- The House plenary approved unanimously a bill providing for the establishment of a bioethics committee to assess moral, ethical, social and legal aspects of biomedical research and medical care.

    The bill provides for committees on moral standards to be set up at various institutions and other subcommittees to be established for better distribution of the work the bioethics committee is to carry out.

    The bill also stipulates the penalties to be imposed for violating the approved legislation and outlines the regulations for professional practice.

    Powell to seek greater momentum on Cyprus

    Washington, Nov 30 (CNA) -- US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he will explore ways to move forward on Cyprus during his contacts next week in Ankara.

    "I would like to see greater momentum with respect to moving forward on Cyprus and I will explore with my Turkish interlocutors what might be done," Powell told a small group of journalists at a State Department briefing.

    IATA classifies CY among the best European airlines

    Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNA) -- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has classified Cyprus Airways among the best European airlines, a Cyprus Airways press release said here today.

    IATA carried out recently a survey pertaining the level of services provided during flights of European airlines, covering the period from April to September 2001.

    Passengers and IATA officers, engaged in the survey, assessed and gave points to the services of airlines they traveled with. These services have to do with the overall provision of services during a flight, quality, quantity and presentation of meals, beverages' and newspapers' variety on board.

    Cyprus Airways is among the three best airlines in all fields. The other two prominent airlines are Austrian Airlines and Aer Lingus.

    Cyprus Airways note that this is not the first time they are distinguished for the quality of their services and are classified among the best airlines.

    EU seeks Cypriot entrepreneurs contribution to peace effort

    Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNÁ) -- EU Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has asked Greek Cypriot and especially Turkish Cypriot businessmen to contribute towards the success of next weeks face-to-face meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Verheugen briefed today in Brussels members of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce on the islands accession course, and called on the Turkish Cypriot members to intervene towards Turkish Cypriot entrepreneurs with a view to influencing their politicians so that Tuesdays meeting will bear fruit.

    Speaking from Brussels, Vasilis Rologis, president of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told CNA that todays meeting with Verheugen had a "political taste to it."
