[02] De Soto to attend Clerides' and Denktash's face-to-face meeting
Nicosia, Nov 20 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on
Cyprus Alvaro De Soto arrives here December 2 and will hold separate
meetings with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader
Rauf Denktash the following day.
Clerides and Denktash will meet December 4, at 10:00 local time, at the
residence of the UN Secretary-General's Acting Special Representative in
Cyprus Zbigniew Wlosowicz, in the buffer zone. De Soto will attend the
meeting, which is the result of an exchange of letters between the
President and Denktash and will take place in the framework of Kofi Annan's
good offices.

[03] Syrian President expresses support to Cyprus
Nicosia, Nov 20 (CNA) -- Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has reaffirmed
his country's consistent and constant support to Cyprus based on
international law principles, the UN Charter, the Security Council's
resolutions and the two countries' friendly relations.
Assad received today in Damascus honorary President of the Cyprus
Socialdemocrats Movement, Vassos Lyssarides, who gave the Syrian President
a message by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and briefed him on the
latest developments on the political question and the island's bid to join
the EU.
An official press release notes that the Syrian President elaborated on his
positions concerning international developments and said that disputes in
the region of the eastern Mediterranean, such as the Cyprus and Palestinian
questions, were connected and their solution would bring peace to the
region.

[04] Cyprus inaugurates cinema festival
Nicosia, Nov 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus is set to inaugurate a festival bearing the
title "Cinema Horizons", which will take place from 2001 through 2002 and
2003, during the cultural annual events named "Kypria". The first part will
take place December 3 - 9 with the screening of 12 films by young artists
from Cyprus and other countries around the world.
Speaking at a press conference, Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture
Ouranios Ioannides said that films, projected during the festival, will be
given "The prize of the public" and noted that the public will have the
opportunity to enjoy new forms of cinema expression and that the goal of
this festival is to host a "different" cinema with independence and
quality.
He also noted that the Ministry aims at supporting cinema producers,
providing them with opportunities to become distinguished and well known.
