    Barsony to brief PACE Political Affairs Committee on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 18 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus deputies Panagiotis Demetriou (right-wing Democratic Rally) and Doros Christodoulides (left-wing AKEL) fly today to Vilnius, Lithuania, to attend a meeting of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly's (PACE) Political Affairs Committee to be held November 19 to 20.

    An official press release said that PACE rapporteur on the situation in Cyprus, Hungarian deputy Andras Barsony will present during the meeting a memorandum on his assessments about the situation in Cyprus and will orally brief the Committee's members about his recent visit to the island, November 12-15.

    The meeting will also deal with the accession application submitted to the Council of Europe by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and with the issue of the democratically elected political parties of Europe, whose functioning is prohibited, contrary to CoE principles.

    President of the Lithuanian parliament Arturas Paulauskas and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis will address the meeting. CNÁ/MK/2001

    Cyprus Justice Minister to attend meeting on EUROPOL

    Nicosia, Nov 18 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis departs tomorrow for Brussels to attend a meeting of the Ministers of candidate countries for EU membership, responsible for police matters, with their 15 EU counterparts.

    An official press release said Belgian Interior Minister, whose country currently holds EU rotating Presidency, will brief the Ministers of the candidate countries on efforts to set up the European Police.

    Cyprus education: 268,8 million pounds spent in 1999

    Nicosia, Nov 18 (CNA) -- Cypriot students abroad totaled 12 thousand 147 during the academic year 1999/2000 and the main countries of their study were Greece with 52,8% of students, the United Kingdom with 23,2% and USA with 14%, Cyprus Statistical Service annual report on "Statistics of Education" reads.

    According to the report public expenditure on all levels of education amounted in 1999 to 268,8 million pounds (one pound trades at about 1,6 US dollars) and accounted for 15,6% of the Government budget and 5,7% of the Gross Domestic Product while the current public cost per pupil/student by level of education was one thousand 272 pounds for pre-primary, one thousand 444 for primary, 2 thousand 92 pounds for secondary and 5 thousand 81 pounds for the third level education.

    At all levels of education there were 1.210 educational institutions, 163.654 full time pupils and students and 11.567 teaching staff giving a pupil/teacher ration of 14,1.

    Of the total pupils/students 80,3% were enrolled in public educational institutions and 19,7% in private.

    The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were for pre- primary 26.155, primary 63.715, secondary 63.043, third level 10.414 and special education 327. CNA/MK/KST/2001
