    [01] Lavrov: Moscow backs efforts to restore sovereignty in Cyprus

    by Maria Myles New York, Nov 10 (CNA) -- Russia's permanent representative to the UN Ambassador Sergey Lavrov has said Moscow backs the efforts by the government of Cyprus to restore sovereignty on the entire island.

    In statements after a working lunch here yesterday, hosted by President Glafcos Clerides for the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Lavrov did not rule out the possibility of a visit to Cyprus by Russian President Vladimir Putin. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [02] Negroponte: The US support efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue

    by Maria Myles New York, Nov 10 (CNA) -- US Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador John Negroponte stressed here yesterday that the solution to the Cyprus issue must be found under the UN auspices and the relevant resolutions the Security Council has adopted on the question of Cyprus.

    "We are very supportive of efforts to resolve the question of Cyprus but it must be done under the relevant UN resolutions," he said after a working lunch, hosted by President Glafcos Clerides for the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Secuirty Council. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [03] Clerides: Annan disappointed with Denktash's position

    by Maria Myles New York, Nov 10 (CNA) -- The UN will continue its efforts to resume the peace talks on Cyprus, President Glafcos Clerides said here yesterday, after a 45- minute-long meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    He also said Annan feels "disappointed" with the position adopted by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who rejected Annan's invitation to talks in early September, extended to the President and Denktash.

    "It seems that they (UN) will continue the efforts to resume talks," President Clerides said after the meeting, adding that he does not know whether Annan would be sending a new invitation. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [04] Annan - Clerides: Secretary General's good offices in Cyprus

    by Maria Myles New York, Nov 10 (CNA) -- The main part of discussions here yesterday between UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Glafcos Clerides was taken up by the state of play of Annan's good offices in Cyprus, a UN statement issued after a meeting between Annan and Clerides said.

    The statement, issued by the office of Annan's spokesman, notes that terrorism and the comprehensive test ban treaty were also part of the discussions at the meeting. CNA/MM/RM/2001

    [05] Spokesman: Annan believes window of opportunity for Cyprus is still open

    by Maria Myles New York, Nov 10 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan believes that the window of opportunity for a Cyprus settlement is still open, in spite of the rejection of his invitation to talks by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here yesterday, after a meeting President Glafcos Clerides had with Annan.

    Papapetrou also said that the President put to the Secretary General the Turkish threats to annex Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas, pointing out that such remarks violate the fundamental principles of international law.| CNA/MM/RM/2001
