US supports bicummunal federation in Cyprus

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 9 (CNA) -- The US is hopeful that the continuing conversations on the Cyprus question would pave the way forward and enable the UN-led peace talks to resume, State Department Cyprus Coordinator Thomas Weston has said, adding that diplomacy should be the basis of efforts to return to the negotiating table and not public remarks by parties involved in the issue.

Weston also said the US continues to believe that a bicommunal bizonal federation is the solution in Cyprus, something has been talked about for years at the UN and elsewhere.

Speaking after a meeting here with President Glafcos Clerides, Weston said he had a "wide ranging discussion, very positive, very friendly" during which the common effort to find a solution to the division of the island in a comprehensive settlement was the focus of the meeting, which lasted well over an hour.|

Denktash should accept UN invitation for Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will happily have a face-to-face meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denkash in Nicosia, provided the latter accepts an invitation to resume the UN-led peace talks, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here yesterday, responding to statements by Denktash that he extends an invitation for a direct meeting with Clerides.

The spokesman said such a meeting could take place with a view to facilitate the UN peace process, aiming at finding a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.

"The President's reply to Denktash's invitation for a face-to-face meeting is very simple: as soon as Denktash accepts Annan's invitation to return to the process of a dialogue under UN auspices, the President would, with pleasure, meet with him face to face with a view to facilitate through such a meeting the process, conducted under UN auspices," Papapetrou said.|

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 9 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's spokesman Fred Eckhard would not comment on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that he was extending an invitation for face-to-face talks to President Glafcos Clerides.

"No comment," was Eckhard's response to a press question. He said he would not comment because the comment was not aimed at the UN.|

CEH send letter to US officials

Nicosia, Nov 9 (CNA) -- "If Turkey adheres to internationally acceptable standards of conduct and accedes to the EU, benefits will accrue to US security interests, the people of Cyprus, the people of Greece and especially the people of Turkey", leaders of the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes in the US (CEH) stress in a letter to US key Senators, Members of Congress and administration officials.

In their letter, CEH leaders, underline the importance of US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler's public statement that "the US supports the accession of Cyprus to the EU and a solution to the Cyprus problem is not a precondition for this accession," as a reaction to Turkey's threats to annex the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus if Cyprus is admitted to the EU before a settlement of the Cyprus problem and Turkey's request for US support of this position.| CNA/AAR/GP/2001
