    [02] Leopold Maurer - Cyprus - EU

Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) -- Leopold Maurer, European Commission team leader for accession talks with Cyprus, charted a "road map" for the conclusion of negotiations and the signing of an accession treaty between the eastern Mediterranean island and the European Union during the next 14 months.

He also spoke of the possibility of a "big bang" within the EU, with the simultaneous entry of ten new members by 2004.

In a speech here last night to the Cyprus MBA Association on the latest developments in EU enlargement and the progress of Cyprus in adopting community legislation, Maurer said the island continued to be the frontrunner in the EU's ongoing accession talks with 12 applicant countries, having provisionally closed 23 of the 29 chapters of the "acquis" and predicted it would be included in the first wave of enlargement.| CNA/TT/GP/2001
