    [03] Cyprus - Egypt - Syria - Natural gas

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus, Egypt and Syria will discuss Friday the supply of natural gas to Cyprus from Egypt and Syria and the delimitation of the exclusive economic zone between Cyprus and Egypt, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis said here today.

    "We do not expect Friday's meeting in Cairo to come to any conclusions at this stage but it is part of a process we are engaged in and we hope to make some progress," the minister said after a meeting here of the ministerial committee, set up especially for the exploration and exploitation of natural gas and oil reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean.

    [04] Australian PM - Famagusta mayor

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Australia believes that the time for a lasting peace on Cyprus is long overdue and expresses strong support to UN efforts aiming at finding a solution to the protracted Cyprus question.

    Canberra also believes that peace can only be achieved through dialogue and the building of confidence and trust between communities.

    [05] Greek - Armenian deputy defence ministers - Visit

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Greek Deputy Defence Minister Demetrios Apostolakis and Armenian Deputy Defence Minister M. Grigoryan arrive later in the week for a visit to Cyprus, during which they will watch part of the National Guard's annual military exercises, which started today.

    Immediately after his arrival on Friday, Apostolakis visiting Cyprus at the invitation of Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos will have a meeting with the minister and on Saturday he will watch the final part of the military exercises, including night manoeuvres.

    [06] National Guard - Military manoeuvres - Start

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- The annual military exercises of the Republic's armed forces, code-named "Nikiforos 2001" (the victory bearer) started today when reservists and serving soldiers reported for duty at specified locations for the six-day maneouvres, in which Greece's armed forces are not participating.

    "This is the culmination of our exercises, the non-participation of the Greek air force and navy will not affect either the scenario of the exercises or their training designs," Cyprus Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos said this morning as he watched the men and women call for duty.

    [07] British High Commissioner - Meetings

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Britain believes that the international community has to address regional tensions, including the Cyprus question, as well as to deal with the scourge of terrorism, its High Commissioner here Lyn Parker has said.

    He also said this has become even more pressing following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, and reiterated London's strong support to UN efforts for a Cyprus settlement, adding that "we have to find ways to solve this problem which has been left unsolved far too long."

    [08] Cyprus - EU - Belgium

    Brussels, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Belgium, the current European Union president, has assured twelve candidate countries that the agreed timetable for their accession by the end of 2002 will be observed to enable newcomers to vote in the European Parliament elections in 2004.

    Cyprus' Ambassador to Belgium Popi Avraam, who hosted a working lunch for the Belgian deputy foreign minister Anemy Neyts and the ambassadors of the twelve candidate countries as well as the EU troika, thanked Neyts for the EU decision to involve the twelve candidates in the Convention to prepare the 2004 Intergovernmental Conference.

    [09] Cyprus - White powder scare - False alarm

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- White powder, spotted in a container at Larnaca International Airport and outside the House of Representatives, turned out to be white colour hardener in the first case and flour in the second, officials have said.

    All precautionary measures were taken by the authorities after the discovery of the white power and government officials appealed for calm and a more restraint approach to such incidents to avoid causing panic among the public.

    [10] Cyprus - Slovakia - Cooperation

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Slovakia will sign tomorrow a cooperation protocol to enhance bilateral ties and encourage further agreements on health, agriculture, employment, security and the fight against terrorism.

    The protocol will be signed by Finance Minister Takis Klerides and Slovak Deputy Minister of Economy Peter Brno, currently visiting Cyprus, on the occasion of the first session of the mixed Commission on Economic Scientific, Technical and Industrial Cooperation.
